Patients with mild acne can be treated with topical therapies; however, those with moderate to severe acne will require systemic therapy. Oral antibiotic treatment, hormonal therapies and isotreretinoin are the mainstay systemic therapies for acne.

Despite the popular belief that certain greasy foods directly contribute to acne, there is actually insufficient evidence of a link between “food enemies” and pimples. While that means no food is inherently evil when it comes to causing breakouts, some are certainly better than others. To keep skin in check, Dr. Day suggests eating a diet high in antioxidants and low in processed foods. Still, she cautions that a diet overhaul alone won’t clear up skin. Here are foods that can help clear acne (and a few that make it worse!).

When compared to ice pick scars that appear more column-like, box car scars look more angular with very sharp vertical edges that look, like a box (hence the name). The depression for this kind of scar is wider than the ice pick’s, giving the skin a pitted appearance.
Access to subsidised oral isotretinoin for severe acne, was widened on 1 March, 2009, to allow vocationally registered General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners working in an appropriate field to prescribe the medicine, fully subsidised, subject to Special Authority criteria.15
Doxycycline 50 – 100 mg, daily, for four to six months, is the first-line antibiotic choice (N.B. 50 mg tablets are not fully subsidised).6 If effective, the dose can be tapered after four months to alternate day treatment. If the standard dose of doxycycline is ineffective, increase to 100 mg, twice daily, provided it is tolerated. Doxycycline is contraindicated in children aged under 12 years and women who are pregnant.
