Blackheads and whiteheads (comedones). Comedones are enlarged hair follicles filled with sebum. Blackheads are comedones that have pushed through the skin’s surface. Exposure to air causes the sebum to turn black. Whiteheads are comedones that have not pushed through the skin’s surface.

If ITG were to have a mascot, and that mascot was a facialist instead of a cartoon character, I’m relatively certain we would draft Renée Rouleau for the job. Even among the Joelle Ciocco’s and the Isabelle Bellis’ of the world, Renée has cast something of a spell over the whole team since we first discovered her miraculous Anti-Cyst Treatment way back when. Renée, it turned out, didn’t just have great products, she is a veritable tip hotline for problematic skin, too—Tom spent an hour on the phone with her once discovering the difference between AHAs and BHAs. Her specialty is balancing acne-prone skin, with a side of helping everyone discover their own bespoke skincare routine. For this entry in our Facialist series, we asked Renée to focus on just that because, whether you have acne, just occasional breakouts, or a cabinet full of spot treatments you don’t know what to do with, you deserve answers.

Even though isotretinoin does not remain in the body after therapy is stopped, improvement is often long-lasting. It is safe to take two or three courses of the drug if unresponsive acne makes a comeback. It is, however, best to wait at least several months and to try other methods before using isotretinoin again.

Topical retinoids such as adapalene (Differin), tazarotene (Tazorac) and tretinoin (Retin-A). Topical retinoids are actually similar to isotretinoin since they may reach the blood stream. Although studies show that the amount of these medications absorbed through the skin is low (about 5%), they still may increase the risk of birth defects. Please note that all retinoids or cosmetic products that contain them are required to carry a warning that states it is unknown whether they can harm a developing baby or a child that is being breastfed.

Note that the tendency to develop acne scars often runs in the family so if you have blood relatives who have acne scars: chances you may have to cope with the same issues. Be proactive and don’t let dead skin cells or sebum build up, as you know this is the starting point of acne. Use a daily cleanser and exfoliate regularly.

First, your doctor cleanses your skin because the skin has to be clean and oil free before getting a chemical peel. It is good to wash the face a few times with a mild oil removing soap or use an alcohol wipe

Retinoids basically chemical compounds that are related to Vitamin A. Topically, retinoid creams can speed up skin cell turnover, unclog pores, fade pigmentation, shrink pores, and retexturize the surface of the skin.

Benzoyl peroxide clears the pores and reduces bacterial count by creating an environment where bacteria cannot survive. It dries skin and works as a peeling agent. It commonly causes dryness and irritation, and in some can cause burning, itching, peeling and swelling. Topical use of green tea reduces sebum production and protects against acne-causing bacteria. Its high antioxidant concentration eliminates the free radicals that lead to inflammation.

Benzoyl peroxide: This active ingredient attacks and kills bacteria and slows down the glands’ production of oil. Benzoyl works as a peeling agent, accelerating skin turnover and clearing pores. This, in turn, reduces the bacterial count in the affected area.

Considerations: Burning, itching, peeling, redness, and dryness are the most reported side effects, particularly at the onset of treatment.1,3Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and inflammation of the colon have been reported.1,3

Use sunscreen every time you’re in the sun. Read the ingredients list on the back of your sunscreen, and if you’re acne-prone, look for lighter chemical ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, methoxycinnamate, octocylene, and zinc oxide.

Studies have come to no significant conclusions about the difference in effectiveness between the three, and they tend to be the most commonly prescribed birth control pills for acne in women that are at least 14 to 15 years old, need contraception, and have already started menstruating.

Keep in mind that this is 10% benzol acid and you need to use a very small and trageted amounts on trouble areas. I like to use it on my blackheads and areas that are beginning to get a red blemish and to rub in it like a lotion. NEVER PUT IT ON THE AREA OF YOU EYES! In addition to changing patients’ diets, Dr. Jaliman prescribes Spironolactone, a diuretic that blocks the male hormone receptors in the body to prevent the cells from absorbing testosterone, an acne-promoting androgen. “I prescribe it five to 10 times a day,” she says. Dr. Jaliman also suggests topical anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and intralesional cortisone injections for those with cystic acne who are going off the pill. All of these, she says, are safer alternatives to Accutane. “You just have to get people through that three-month adjustment period,” she says.

Oysters: Several studies have indicated that the mineral zinc may reduce the effects of acne. It’s best to get zinc from your food, however, as too much in supplements (more than 100 mg a day) can result in side effects. Eat more oysters, toasted wheat germ (sprinkled on salads and steamed veggies), veal liver, roast beef, roasted pumpkin and squash seeds, and dried watermelon seeds.

  1. You’ve probably seen those tiny glass jars filled with liquid and some solid sediment at the bottom—sometimes it’s pink, sometimes it’s white, and (in the case of my favorite product) sometimes it’s flesh-tone. The solid in the jar is usually a mix of drying ingredient like camphor, sulfur, and zinc oxide, but many brands throw in a few little extras. Cult-favorite Mario Badescu Drying Lotion adds calming calamine and exfoliating salacylic acid to their formula, while my favorite, End-Zit Acne Control Drying Lotion, keeps it simple, but comes in several shades so that it conceals your breakout while it treats it.
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin, helping to get rid of the dead skin cells that can clog pores. Just like salicylic acid, you can find glycolic in washes, peels, moisturizers, and serums at your local beauty store or drugstore.
The approach to acne treatment underwent significant changes during the twentieth century. Retinoids were introduced as a medical treatment for acne in 1943.[81] Benzoyl peroxide was first proposed as a treatment in 1958 and has been routinely used for this purpose since the 1960s.[125] Acne treatment was modified in the 1950s with the introduction of oral tetracycline antibiotics (such as minocycline). These reinforced the idea amongst dermatologists that bacterial growth on the skin plays an important role in causing acne.[121] Subsequently, in the 1970s tretinoin (original trade name Retin A) was found to be an effective treatment.[126] The development of oral isotretinoin (sold as Accutane and Roaccutane) followed in 1980.[127] After its introduction in the United States it was recognized as a medication highly likely to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. In the United States, more than 2,000 women became pregnant while taking isotretinoin between 1982 and 2003, with most pregnancies ending in abortion or miscarriage. About 160 babies were born with birth defects.[128][129]
