Chemical peels: Whether the superficial peels (like glycolic acid) performed by estheticians or deeper ones performed in the doctor’s office, chemical peels are of modest, supportive benefit only, and in general, they do not substitute for regular therapy.
For 6 –12 months after an acne breakout, stay out of the sun as much as possible to avoid making dark spots and scars worse. When you are in the sun, use an all-natural sunscreen to protect skin. If scars do develop, dot a drop of rosehip seed oil or carrot seed oil on the scars twice per day until you notice a difference in the scar.
Skin Care – Follow a daily skin care routine that involves using the right cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for your skin. Use the face packs that are mentioned above once or twice a week, and you will definitely see your skin become clearer and brighter.
Olive oil soothes the inflammation in and around the pimple. It also moisturizes the skin, thus bringing a balance in the amount of sebum that produced. Acne scars will soon start fading away with regular usage of this oil (44).
Practitioners should discuss with the patient, and then provide in writing, the potential adverse effects, particularly teratogenicity in females. A suitable patient information brochure is provided with the medicine by the distributor. Baseline laboratory investigations should be requested. Female patients will require advice on contraceptive options, and where necessary, be prescribed contraceptives (some will already be using oral contraceptives for managing acne symptoms). Patients (and parents/caregivers for those under age 16 years) should be asked to sign a consent form, to indicate that they understand the adverse effects that are possible while taking isotretinoin and, for female patients, the importance of not becoming pregnant during the course of their treatment and a further month after it has been discontinued.
As mentioned above, genetics are thought to play a major role in your susceptibility to acne. While our experts agreed unanimously on some face fixers, their opinions were split on others. All agreed that, with few exceptions, treating acne is almost always a multi-pronged approach — and that it’s often a matter of managing acne, not eradicating it. (They also noted that not all acne is the same; a treatment may work wonders on blackheads, for instance, but do diddley-squat for cysts.)
Leigh Ann Morgan began working as a writer in 2004. She has extensive experience in the business field having served as the manager of a $34 million rental property portfolio. Morgan also appeared as a guest on an episode of National Public Radio’s “Marketplace Money” in 2005.
Topical or systemic antibiotics should always be used in combination with benzoyl peroxide, a topical retinoid or azelaic acid. In women, they may also be used in combination with antiandrogen therapy or oral contraceptive pill.
Treatment is normally no different than that for the milder acne forms. Over-the-counter products and even some home remedies can be effective, but since this type is relatively severe, it may be necessary to visit a dermatologist if the products or home remedies you are using are not effective. Many, though not all, over-the-counter products contain three important agents used in fighting acne:
Spironolactone is an androgen blocker. It can be used to treat hormonal acne in women (only) by reducing the production of androgens (male hormones) in a woman’s body, which can then reduce oil production in the skin. If you’re wondering how to get rid of acne overnight, keep in mind that aldactone can take up to three months to start taking effect.
What it is: Originally under the brand name “Accutane” but now available only in generic form, isotretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A taken in pill form for 15-20 weeks. Doctors normally prescribe it for people with “severe nodular acne” that does not respond to other treatments. Nodules are inflammatory lesions with a diameter of 5mm or more. A single course of 15-20 weeks has been shown to result in complete clearing and long-term remission of acne in many people.1-2Learn more on the Accutane page of acne.org.
For Women: Unless you have had your uterus and ovaries removed (total hysterectomy with oophorectomy) or have been in menopause for at least 12 months in a row, you are considered to be of child-bearing potential.
