If your acne is the hormonal type, “no topical product alone will make a huge difference,” says Jennifer MacGregor, a dermatologist in New York City. In fact, the treatment a doctor gives you may not even seem like it’s about skin at all. For many women, taking birth-control pills can help clear up skin. Because most contain estrogen and progestin, they help suppress testosterone and prevent breakouts. Already on the pill and still breaking out? A doctor may prescribe spironolactone, a drug for hypertension that controls androgens. Don’t take it if you’re thinking of getting pregnant, though, since it can cause birth defects. (Many doctors prescribe spironolactone to women of child-bearing age only if they’re also on the pill.)

What comes before the pimples even head to the surface of your skin? Though most people tend to get acne in their teens, women are more likely to suffer throughout their lives. “Acne is predominantly hormone-driven. Because of hormone fluctuations throughout your cycle, you may break out around your period or during ovulation,” Dr. explains. There are also genetic components that drive how likely you are to get acne, like how oily your skin is naturally.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that some popular nonprescription acne lotions, cleansers and other skin products can cause a serious reaction. This type of reaction is quite rare, so don’t confuse it with the redness, irritation or itchiness where you’ve applied medications or products.

If you are spot prone anyway, I would like to recommend Sudocrem. Forget the “put a tiny bit just on the spot”, you can spread it all over your face if you want, it won’t harm you, but it does reduce and clear spots very well if you leave it overnight. Unfortunately after a while, it doesn’t seem to work as well as the first few times you use it, but it still does help. It’s fairly cheap and can be bought pretty much anywhere that sells cosmetics etc.

Acne treatment that works throughout the body: Medicine that works throughout the body may be necessary when you have red, swollen types of acne. This type of treatment is usually necessary to treat acne cysts and nodules. Your dermatologist may prescribe one or more of these:

Diet therapy has been suggested. Fulton et al performed a study on chocolate, having teenage patients with acne consume 1 bar of chocolate each day. Some of the patients improved and some worsened, but the vast majority were unchanged. [67] This study helped decrease the emphasis on diet as a causal factor in acne vulgaris. However, investigators always returned to the diet question. Data suggest that the westernization of certain Native American populations and the related consumption of unhealthy “junk” foods (eg, potato chips, soft drinks) has had a negative impact on general and skin health, resulting in acne flares. Skim milk, compared with full-fat milk, has been found to have a positive association with acne, especially in teenagers and young adults. [68, 69] Causation was not able to be drawn from the case control studies, but the mechanism involving hormonal constituents of the skim milk has been postulated. [68] . Whey protein is a commonly used supplement that has been suggested to worsen acne and should be discontinued if flaring of the condition is associated with its use.

You may not know you have it, or you might be painfully embarrassingly aware. But the fact of the matter is that back acne (a.k.a. bacne) is extremely common, especially in the summertime. Think about it, you sweat more while working out, during the day, and while you sleep at night. Exposure to the sun dries out your skin, creating clogged pores. Worst of all, in the summertime you are more likely to be dehydrated. It’s basically a perfect recipe for breakouts. And this is the time of year when you want to show off your body not hide it under a shirt at the beach. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to prevent and treat the scourge of pimples setting up camp between your shoulder blades. So before you give up hope or rush to a dermatologist, here is your anti-bacne summer checklist:

Some kids will rarely get a pimple — those lucky ducks! But many kids will get some pimples, even if they take steps to prevent acne. It’s totally normal. In fact, some girls who have a handle on their acne may find that it comes out a few days before they get their periods. This is a common problem called premenstrual acne and is caused by hormonal changes in the body. Boys undergo hormonal changes, too, and may be more likely to suffer from severe forms of acne.

Scars (permanent): People who get acne cysts and nodules often see scars when the acne clears. You can prevent these scars. Be sure to see a dermatologist for treatment if you get acne early — between 8 and 12 years old. If someone in your family had acne cysts and nodules, you also should see a dermatologist if you get acne. Treating acne before cysts and nodules appear can prevent scars.

AHAs are designed to prevent pore clogging and are commonly used in conjunction with topical treatments. Alpha Hydroxy acids serve as a gentle exfoliator, and can increase the effectiveness of other products.

Even though there is no clear evidence that certain foods cause acne, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, eat a well-balanced diet, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and head to the gym every now and then.12 Your body will thank you.

For severe cases, isotretinoin, or Accutane, is available through a prescription. Isotretinoin is a vitamin-A derivative that shrinks the glands that produce sebum. It comes with various risks and side-effects, which you should fully understand before embarking on a course of treatment.

3. Drink more water. Maybe your grandma swears by drinking 2 liters of water a day, or maybe you’ve just heard those red-carpet interviews where celebrities discuss the importance of hydration in their skin care routine. Wherever you heard it, believe it. Skin cells are made primarily of water, and the better hydrated your body is, the healthier your skin will be. This, of course, is not a replacement for a topical moisturizer — water reaches our other organs first, therefore applying an effective moisturizer is the most direct way to keep your skin hydrated.

The toothpaste defianetly works. And also try this #1 get a rag wet it with hot water and make sure the rag is steaming put it on your face #2 get a bar of soup rub it on the rag then apply to your face #3 rise the soap off with the staming rag #4 put really cold water on the rag and put on your face then dab your face with a dry towel.

What it is: You may have heard of tretinoin in reference to “Retin-A” wrinkle treatments. Tretinoin is retinoic acid and vitamin A acid combined, and comes in various strengths in creams, gels, and liquids for topical use on the skin. It is used to treat acne and also to treat sun damaged skin or wrinkles and is usually applied once per day.1Learn more from the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Kids who have serious acne can get help from their doctor or a dermatologist (a doctor who treats skin problems). Doctors can prescribe stronger medicine than you can buy at the store. Acne prescriptions can include stronger creams that prevent pimples from forming or antibiotics that decrease swelling (puffiness) and kill bacteria that cause pimples.
