While they’re nothing to be embarrassed about (it happens to the best of us), I can understand why you would want to get rid of these stubborn breakouts forever. Since going off my birth control pills two months ago, I’ve been dealing with this issue, and it’s been driving me crazy. So I made it my mission to test a bunch of products and techniques to see what works best. Here are the results! Check out these 10 tips on how to prevent and get rid of back and chest acne:

Before prescribing isotretinoin, dermatologists ask questions about the patient’s physical and mental health. They ask what medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements the patient takes. If everything looks okay, the patient must get a few medical tests. Everyone needs a blood test. Women who can get pregnant must have pregnancy tests. Women need 2 negative pregnancy tests before isotretinoin can be prescribed.

“Just like with any condition, there isn’t a magic bullet,” Huang cautioned. “The treatment depends on the severity of the acne, the type of acne, where it’s located, and the patient’s individual preference and motivation for treatment. But these multilayered approaches that are tailored to the individual patient do work well.”

This is a thorny issue, because Big Pharma has a firm hand in the treatment of acne and they are supporting symptomatic treatment of acne rather than treating the cause. There are surface treatment modalities that are supposed to open the skin pores: peeling agents such as benzoyl peroxide. General practitioners often treat the infection with antibiotic pills (tetracycline or erythromycin), but this is not treating the cause, only the super infection that comes from the plugged up skin pores (stasis of sebaceous gland secretions). Another approach is topical application of antibiotic and peeling agent in combination (1% clindamycin and 5% benzoyl peroxide gel), which is applied twice daily (Ref.2). Resistant cases, usually the ones who have a family history of severe acne, have been treated by a skin specialist who has a special license to treat with isotretinoin (Accutane), a vitamin A derivative, which works in many cases, but which can have serious side effects. These include skin dryness, eye dryness, muscle and bone pains, headaches, liver enzyme abnormalities, and instability of mood including depression and causing birth defects in the fetus of a pregnant woman (Ref. 3). In 2009 the manufacturer stopped distributing the drug in the US, because of too many lawsuits regarding damages from the drug.

The most commonly available topical retinoids are tretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene. A meta-analysis of five multicentre randomized investigator-blind trials involving 900 patients showed adapalene 0.1% gel to be as effective as, but less irritating than, tretinoin 0.025% gel.8 Different concentrations of retinoids affect tolerability. One commonly used approach is to start with the lowest concentration and increase as tolerated.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation not an acne scar, but a red, pink, brown or tan skin discoloration where acne has previously flared up. It will usually disappear on its own in a year or so. Many skin lightening products claim to help reduce the visibility of these acne “scars.” Their active ingredient, hydroquinone, works to slow melanin production and can reduce dark brown marks, but melanin isn’t the cause of red and pink acne discolorations. A better option is to use the best foundation for acne prone skin you can find to hide the marks until they naturally fade away.

Recommended therapies for first-line use in acne vulgaris treatment include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical or oral antibiotics.[76] Procedures such as light therapy and laser therapy are not considered to be first-line treatments and typically have an adjunctive role due to their high cost and limited evidence of efficacy.[75] Medications for acne work by targeting the early stages of comedo formation and are generally ineffective for visible skin lesions; improvement in the appearance of acne is typically expected between six and eight weeks after starting therapy.[1]

To dry out my pimples, I use the Made from Earth Pore & Blackhead Mask – this mask does a great job drying pimples out. For larger pimples, they start drying out within days. For smaller ones, they’re usually gone in the next day or two.

Blackheads are, essentially, open comedones. “Comedone refers to plugging of the follicular opening,” explains NYC dermatologist Elizabeth Hale, M.D., referring to hair follicles that technically cover your entire face and body (hi, peach fuzz). “Every hair follicle appears in a sebaceous gland.” So a blackhead is the mixture of dead cells, bacteria, and grime that builds up and hardens in the follicular opening—but it’s open to the world, which is why blackheads are so easy (read: tempting) to push out.

Try to avoid eating too much junk food as it may be one factor which could cause acne on your back to occur. Furthermore, scratching your back could cause acne to spread so this should be avoided too.

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can speed up healing, making it ideal for breakout-prone skin. Though I recommend using it in very small amounts with jojoba oil, hemp seed oil or coconut oil, along with one of the essential oils above, it’s high in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, proteins and minerals, which can help reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation associated with breakouts. It can even help heal scars caused by acne.

No one dies from acne–so why treat it? “The answer is that it can deeply affect your psyche, behavior, and relationships,” says Dr. Lee. If you’ve been grappling with acne for years, understand that pimples aren’t your fault. There’s at least one silver lining: “Having oily skin means you have built-in moisture, which keeps skin looking younger,” she says. Remember that next time you wake up to a killer zit.
Hormonal Acne: Women and teenagers are particularly susceptible to hormonal acne, which is caused when hormones trigger excess facial oil production. This type of acne can worsen depending on hormone fluctuations, which is why some women find their acne is worse at specific points in the menstrual cycle.
