Do you eat a diet high in processed carbs like sugary desserts, soft drinks and “white” foods like white bread, potatoes and pasta that lack fiber? These types of carbohydrates are rapidly absorbed by your digestive tract, causing insulin levels to quickly rise and protein called insulin-like growth factor, or IGF-1, to go up. Research suggests that higher levels of IGF-1 and insulin may trigger acne outbreaks. The solution? Cut back on foods high in sugar and packaged and processed carb-rich foods, and replace them with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. The fiber in these foods slows down absorption and keeps insulin and IGF-1 levels in check. This may reduce the number of acne outbreaks you get. Cow’s milk is also a source of IGF-1, so cutting back on dairy products may help too.
Selecting appropriate treatment in pregnant women can be challenging because many acne therapies are teratogenic; all topical and especially oral retinoids should be avoided.38 Oral therapies such as tetracyclines and antiandrogens are also contraindicated in pregnancy. Topical and oral treatment with erythromycin may be considered.
“You need to apply medication to the entire affected area that tends to break out, instead of spot treating. With spot treating, you haven’t addressed the area next to it, where another pimple could be brewing, Berson says.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but popping a zit is never a good idea. Your hands aren’t always clean, and dirt under your fingernails and improper squeezing can cause acne to spread or lead to further infection, Dr. Hammerman says. Plus, popping can lead to pitted scars, which stick around much longer than that pimple would.

“Some teenagers are very confident and self-assured even if their face looks terrible, so they’re easy to deal with,” Taylor said. “But then there are kids who become very depressed and withdrawn and may isolate themselves. If you are spot prone anyway, I would like to recommend Sudocrem. Forget the “put a tiny bit just on the spot”, you can spread it all over your face if you want, it won’t harm you, but it does reduce and clear spots very well if you leave it overnight. Unfortunately after a while, it doesn’t seem to work as well as the first few times you use it, but it still does help. It’s fairly cheap and can be bought pretty much anywhere that sells cosmetics etc.
Tretinoin is available as a 0.05% cream, and should be applied thinly, once daily. Application should be Glycolic Acid up” to avoid adverse effects: on the first night, apply for five minutes before washing off; on the second night, apply for ten minutes; on subsequent nights, increase the application time by 30 minutes until a two-hour application is achieved, at which point the cream can be left on overnight.7, 8
