Try some benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is used to kill the bacteria that contribute to acne. Benzoyl peroxide comes in different concentrations, but benzoyl peroxide with a 2.5% concentration is just as effective as 5-10% solutions, and it’s less irritating to the skin to boot. Benzoyl peroxide also helps peel away layers of dead skin, leaving brighter, more rejuvenated skin in its place.

Pimples are seriously the skin problem from hell. They hurt when they are forming, and they look and feel disgusting once they are there. But that’s not it. After that pimple is gone, it leaves you with a little parting gift: an acne scar. The discolored mark is blatant proof that you had a pimple, and it was not fun.

Laser resurfacing involves directing concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin. This procedure may be used to reduce wrinkles, blemished, or acne scars. There are two types of lasers commonly used in laser resurfacing: carbon dioxide and erbium. Treated areas heal in 10-21 days. Possible complications include milia, hyperpigmentation, and swelling.
Approximately 50 million individuals have reported symptoms of acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammation of the skin consisting of whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, or nodules. Eighty-five percent of teenagers report having acne, and 12% of adults can continue to have it. Factors causing acne include follicular hyperkeratinization, microbial colonization, sebum production, and inflammatory mechanisms.
“Over-the-counter products can work in many cases,” said William Huang, MD, another Wake Forest Baptist dermatologist. “But no matter what the TV ads may say, they take time, usually six to eight weeks. You’re not going to have that overnight, ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ phenomenon. That can be frustrating, especially for teenagers. Acne can cause them a lot of stress and affect their emotional well-being, so they want something that works right away, but we don’t have anything like that.”

Rounding out the Clear Acne kit is the Daily Skin Clearing Treatment, an all-over 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream that also touts calming bisabolol and allantoin to alleviate the dryness and irritation that can crop up mid-treatment. Less irritating than its chemical cousin benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil has a long history of fighting mild to moderate acne outbreaks. The oil, which comes from the leaves of a tree native to Australia, has antiseptic properties that help reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin and quell inflammation in skin cells. “We’ve seen it work against a wide range of organisms, including 27 of the 32 strains of acne-causing bacteria,” says Murray. (Tea tree oil has even been shown to help fight yeast infections.) Multiple studies, including a review in the International Journal of Dermatology, back the plant’s power. You can find tea tree oil in a wide variety of soaps, skin washes, and topical solutions. Look for a minimum concentration of 5% of the oil (up to 15% for more severe acne). Two popular products to consider: Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil (Buy now: $80, amazon.com) and Dessert Essence Facial Blemish Stick-Anti-Bacterial with Tea Tree (Buy now: $9, amazon.com).

Treatment of acne scars: For those patients whose acne has gone away but left them with permanent scarring, several options are available. These include surgical procedures to elevate deep, depressed acne scars and laser resurfacing to smooth out shallow acne scars. Newer forms of laser resurfacing (“fractional resurfacing”) are less invasive and heal faster than older methods, although results are less complete and the procedures may need to be repeated three or more times. These treatments can help, but they are never completely successful at eliminating acne scars.

Avoid acne causing cosmetics. Any products that you use should be oil-free, water based, and non-comedogenic. These products will be less likely to cause acne. Also pay attention to the hairsprays, gels, and other hair styling products you are using. These products can clog your pores as well. Try to keep them away from your face when you use them.
If topical treatments are ineffective, doctors may prescribe oral medications for acne. These can help clear up acne breakouts and other skin conditions, but they come with their fair share of potential side effects and consequences.
Acne-associated mood changes and depression have also been reported during treatment, but a 2017 meta-analysis involving 1411 cases found no increased risk of depression with isotretinoin use. Some of the studies that reported a positive causal relationship between isotretinoin and depression included a dose-response relationship with depression of up to 3 mg/kg/day of isotretinoin; however, this high of a dose is not usually prescribed for acne. Other studies have described new-onset depression in both isotretinoin and antibiotic groups, suggesting depression is associated with acne, regardless of treatment. Therefore, it is important to consider the risk of depression among all patients with acne.
