Spironolactone is an androgen blocker. Lortscher says to resist all temptation to pop a pimple when it first appears. This can be hard, because we assume that popping it means eradicating all the gunk, and that this expedites healing. Wrong: “When you pop a zit, the gunk inside can make its way to the skin’s surface and irritate your skin,” he says. “This leads to even more pimples nearby. A papule is a tiny pimple (less than .5 centimeters wide). It usually has a dome shape. Papules are sometimes called “pinheads.” Papules do not contain pus. A large number of papules may indicate moderate to severe acne.
Scientists initially hypothesized that acne represented a disease of the skin’s hair follicle, and occurred due to blockage of the pore by sebum. During the 1880s, bacteria were observed by microscopy in skin samples affected by acne and were regarded as the causal agents of comedones, sebum production, and ultimately acne. During the mid-twentieth century, dermatologists realized that no single hypothesized factor (sebum, bacteria, or excess keratin) could completely explain the disease. This led to the current understanding that acne could be explained by a sequence of related events, beginning with blockage of the skin follicle by excessive dead skin cells, followed by bacterial invasion of the hair follicle pore, changes in sebum production, and inflammation.
But the side effects of targeted spot treatments aren’t always worth it. “So many products instruct consumers to use benzoyl peroxide to spot treat red bumps and pustules. I don’t recommend it,” says Dr. Green. “Benzoyl peroxide, when placed on red spots, can actually cause more irritation and inflammation to the area. It’s best used to prevent red bumps and pustules, and applied all over the area you want to treat.” Robin Townsend, a medical aesthetician based in Cincinnati, was also quick to naysay a spot-treat-only approach: “Acne affects all of the pores. If someone is going to spot treat against my advice, I still suggest they spot treat one day and treat the whole face the next.”

Toothpaste works wonders! I use Crest Pro Health. I apply it go the infected area before I go to bed, which is usually around 11:00 p.m. and when I wake up n the morning, which is usually at 6:00 a.m. my acne is gone! 🙂
Honestly, I’ve only had almost-perfect skin when I was using a harsh prescription cream (would never do that again), and at times when I have been overall healthy (mind, diet, lifestyle habits). Meaning, I have never noticed a significant difference related to products or food. I went on an elimination diet a few years ago, and was eating so cleanly– no processed foods whatsoever, no gluten, no refined sugars, no meat/dairy. This lasted 3 weeks, and I did not notice much of a difference with my face. Obviously everyone is different, and I’ve realized my main problem is stress. I mean, it could be a lot worse if I ate horribly (I am vegan– not that I noticed much of a difference when I changed my diet– not that it was that bad before), but unfortunately I am one of those people that can’t get an easy fix. Fixing your state of mind, and how you respond to stress, is probably the hardest thing to do. But I’m working on it.
