This new feature differs from the long-studied “classical” aurora in several ways. It can be seen from much closer to the equator than its more famous twin, and it emanates from a spot twice as high in the sky. It was also first described and studied not by cultivated researchers—like those who coined the moniker aurora borealis—but by devoted amateurs. They were among the first to photograph the ethereal streak of purple light, and they were the first to give it a name.
Salicylic acid vs benzoyl peroxide has long been a hot topic in the treatment of acne. Salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and has proven to be one of the most effective acne treatments, and a safer option than benzoyl peroxide. It features keratolytic properties, meaning it dissolves keratin, making it an ideal exfoliating ingredient. Salicylic is chemically comparable to aspirin, and can help reduce redness and calm inflammation as pores open up and clear out. When salicylic acid is applied to the skin, it can help break down the fatty compounds found in sebum that can cause pores to clog. The Clear Skin System uses the highest allowable concentration of salicylic acid to ensure effective treatment for acne. This pimple treatment works on plugged comedones by sloughing off dead skin cells and clearing pores.

Instead of resurfacing the whole area, as 100% resurfacing lasers do, fractional lasers can target very tiny columns of skin with surrounding areas of healthy skin untouched. It means that those lasers can simply target the scars and avoid the healthy skin areas.
Alternative and integrative medicine approaches used in the treatment of acne include fish oil, brewer’s yeast, probiotics, oral zinc and topical tea tree oil. More research is needed to establish the potential effectiveness and long-term safety of these and other integrative approaches, such as biofeedback and traditional Chinese medicine. Talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of specific treatments before you try them.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, women in menopause are most likely to spot acne blemishes near the chin, jaw, mouth and neck, is a move away from the T Zone experienced in teenage years. Breakouts can also occur on the chest and back.

Several scales exist to grade the severity of acne vulgaris, but no single technique has been universally accepted as the diagnostic standard. Cook’s acne grading scale uses photographs to grade severity from 0 to 8 (0 being the least severe and 8 being the most severe). This scale was the first to use a standardized photographic protocol to assess acne severity; since its creation in 1979, the scale has undergone several revisions. The Leeds acne grading technique counts acne lesions on the face, back, and chest and categorizes them as inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Leeds scores range from 0 (least severe) to 10 (most severe) though modified scales have a maximum score of 12. The Pillsbury acne grading scale simply classifies the severity of the acne from 1 (least severe) to 4 (most severe).
Globally, acne affects approximately 650 million people, or about 9.4% of the population, as of 2010. It affects nearly 90% of people in Western societies during their teenage years, but can occur before adolescence and may persist into adulthood. While acne that first develops between the ages of 21 and 25 is uncommon, it affects 54% of women and 40% of men older than 25 years of age, and has a lifetime prevalence of 85%. About 20% of those affected have moderate or severe cases. It is slightly more common in females than males (9.8% versus 9.0%). In those over 40 years old, 1% of males and 5% of females still have problems.
“Ice-cold temperatures help constrict blood vessels, so wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and hold it against the bump to reduce redness and bring down the swelling a bit,” says Zeichner, who recommends icing three times an hour in ten-minute intervals, i.e., ten minutes on, ten minutes off. (You want to do this after you wash your face since washing after icing would warm the skin right back up.)
Some deeper scars leave an actual indentation in the skin, Dr. Jegasothy explains: “the surface of the skin is bound to the underlying dermis by a fibrous band, creating an indentation that is very difficult to lift.” The treatment for this type of scar involves cutting the fibrous band and then putting dermal filler, like Bellafill or Juvederm, underneath.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a procedure that treats precancerous cells, in addition to other types of cancer cells. The medical treatment does this with the help of a photosensitizing drug and a light source that activates the applied drug, destroying cancer cells. PDT is approved to treat non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and Barrett’s esophagus. It’s used to treat actinic keratosis, as well as acne, rosacea, skin cancer, sun damage, oily skin, wrinkles, warts, psoriasis, and enlarged sebaceous glands.
Most people find themselves suffering from an acne outbreak at some point usually during their adolescence when they go through puberty. Whether it’s due to hormones or stress. Contrary to popular belief, pimples don’t necessarily mean your skin is dirty or unclean — in fact, over-cleansing can irritate your skin even more. However, hormones aren’t uncontrollable, and there are simple changes you can make to eliminate your breakouts. You can have your glowing, healthy, and pimple-free skin back in no time.
If you’re used to seeing advertisements for acne treatments using five or six different products to clear up blemishes, you might be surprised that a simple three-step kit is our top pick. In fact, we favored Paula’s Choice for its simplicity. This twice-daily, three-step kit — which includes a cleanser, an anti-redness exfoliant, and a leave-on treatment — is concise without cutting corners.
An oral retinoid (isotretinoin) may be prescribed for treating the more extensive nodular and scarring type of acne or severe inflammatory acne, which has not responded to other treatments and is likely to cause scarring. All patients on isotretinoin will experience a peeling and drying of the skin. Most patients who take the appropriate dosage for an appropriate duration should expect an extended remission in their acne. Isotretinoin is associated with a number of serious side effects, including birth defects in babies of women who become pregnant while taking the medicine. The drug can also cause elevated blood lipids. Your doctor must perform certain blood tests to check for these problems and to make sure you are not pregnant (assuming that it is possible) if you are given oral retinoids. Although there is no compelling evidence, depression and inflammatory bowel disease have been reported while taking oral retinoids. All patients on isotretinoin in the United States must be registered in a government-mandated program, the I PLEDGE PROGRAM, which is accessible online or by telephone. Beside the patient, the patient’s physician and the dispensing pharmacy must also register with this program.
