When your acid mantle is damaged, you’re actually more susceptible to breakouts, enlarged pores, and inflammation. To make matters worse, evaporating all the oil on your face can actually set your sebaceous glands into overdrive, leaving your skin oilier than ever. If any product included a simple alcohol high up in its ingredients list, we nixed its whole kit.

As mentioned above, genetics are thought to play a major role in your susceptibility to acne. However, using the best acne products and taking good care of your skin can help you prevent worsening acne and scars later in life. Check out these other known acne causes and aggravators and see how to prevent acne by cutting some of these out of your life:
Isotretinoin (eye-soh-tret-in-OH-in) is a prescription medicine for severe acne. This type of acne causes deep, painful cysts and nodules. These can be the size of a pencil eraser — or larger. As this acne clears, scars often appear.
If your acne is mild to moderate your doctor may well recommend Benzoyl Peroxide in the first instance. It comes as a cream or a gel which you apply to your affected skin and, in many countries, is available without a prescription.
Genetics is thought to be the primary cause of acne in 80% of cases. The role of diet and cigarette smoking is unclear, and neither cleanliness nor exposure to sunlight appear to play a part. During puberty, in both sexes, acne is often brought on by an increase in hormones such as testosterone. A frequent factor is excessive growth of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes, which is normally present on the skin.
Of all forms of laser and light therapy, the most evidence is with photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating acne. PDT involves a photosensitizer applied to the skin, time allowed for it to be absorbed by the pilosebaceous units, and then application of a light source to activate the photosensitizer, generating reactive oxygen species to damage the glands and reduce Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). A 2016 Cochrane review was unable to draw firm conclusions regarding the benefit of light therapy in acne, owing to the variation in wavelength, dose, photosensitizer, comparator interventions, and treatment frequency that were studied. However, despite the interstudy variation, many individual trials show PDT to be effective in reducing lesions in mild-to-severe acne, with 5-aminolevulinic acid and methyl aminolevulinate photosensitizers and red light source as promising treatment components. Sun exposure can cause inflamed spots to turn dark brown. It will also cause premature wrinkles, other signs of aged skin, skin growths and skin cancers. Although some people with acne notice a small improvement in their acne during summer, the benefits of extra exposure to sunlight are at best small, while the risks are large.
You’ve probably heard of the benefits of retinoid creams for anti-aging, but vitamin A is also efficient at clearing up acne. “[Retinoids] cause skin cells to turn over at a faster rate, decrease oil production, and help skin exfoliate,” board-certified dermatologist Rita Linkner, M.D., tells SELF. Another benefit: Acne is inflammation, and retinoids are anti-inflammatory.
Retinol. This vitamin A-derivative targets white and blackheads by treating the ones you have and preventing new ones from popping up. “Since blackheads are the building blocks of acne, it’s really important to prevent them with retinol,” says Dr. Lee.
Rosemary oil has been around for years and used topically for acne and inflamed skin. (15) A Chinese study concluded that rosemary essential oil helps decrease acne due to its antibacterial effects. To better understand the effects, study increased the concentration of the rosemary essential oil, resulting in severely damaged bacterial bodies. Treated bacteria eventually led to bacterial death.
