If you have acne that’s not responding to self-care and over-the-counter treatments, make an appointment with your doctor. Early, effective treatment of acne reduces the risk of scarring and of lasting damage to your self-esteem. After an initial examination, your doctor may refer you to a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions (dermatologist).
One word of caution, though: Dr. Lawrence Green, board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at George Washington University, warns that even moderate acne can be beyond what an over-the-counter treatment can handle, and recommends seeing a specialist. Our advice: Track your progress while using any over-the-counter treatments, and consider consulting a doctor if your skin continues to worsen or not improve after one month.

Topical and oral preparations of nicotinamide (the amide form of vitamin B3) have been suggested as alternative medical treatments. It is thought to improve acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties, its ability to suppress sebum production, and by promoting wound healing. Topical and oral preparations of zinc have similarly been proposed as effective treatments for acne; evidence to support their use for this purpose is limited. The purported efficacy of zinc is attributed to its capacity to reduce inflammation and sebum production, and inhibit P. acnes. Antihistamines may improve symptoms among those already taking isotretinoin due to their anti-inflammatory properties and their ability to suppress sebum production.
The diagnosis of acne vulgaris is primarily clinical.4 History and physical examination can help determine if there is an underlying cause of the acne, such as an exacerbating medication or endocrinologic abnormality causing hyperandrogenism (e.g., polycystic ovarian syndrome). Other dermatologic manifestations of androgen excess include seborrhea, hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia. Endocrinologic testing is not ordered routinely for women with regular menstrual cycles.2,3 Older women, especially those with new-onset acne and other signs of androgen excess (e.g., hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, menstrual irregularities, infertility), should be tested for androgen excess with measurements of total and free serum testosterone, dihydroepiandrosterone, and luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone levels.5 Pelvic ultrasonography may show the presence of polycystic ovaries.5 In prepubertal children with acne, signs of hyperandrogenism include early-onset accelerated growth, pubic or axillary hair, body odour, genital maturation and advanced bone age.
It’ll depend on the kind of treatment you’re going to get. Peels, for example, have a more tingly sensation on the skin while being applied, but the peeling process shouldn’t cause you any pain. Some of the procedures will also require for your doctor to apply numbing cream or local anesthesia to minimize the discomfort.
Not all fabrics are created the same. To vigorously, yet gently exfoliate your skin, you need something that is specially designed for this purpose. Sleeping early works amazing, dont wash your face too much, the oils your face produces plays a huge part on the curing and disappearance of the pimple, believe me! Try sleeping early, you’ll get what i mean. Dont use lemon, it dries your face and it makes more pimples appear, dont use too much tooth paste either. If your face feels itchy or you feel like touching it, dab some ice on it.

What is the best product for acne if you have dry skin? Coconut oil is one of the most versatile and healthy oils on earth. While it can be too heavy for skin, coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer. A study published in Biomaterials found that lauric acid found in coconut oil demonstrates the strongest bacterial activity against acne caused by bacteria. (12) There is an increasing demand for coconut oil beauty products because the lauric acid, antioxidants and medium-chain fatty acids hydrate and restore skin and hair.

Luckily, there’s a dermatologist who’s garnered quite the acne-obsessed cult following: Sandra Lee, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Southern California—aka Dr. Pimple Popper. Her YouTube channel is crazy popular, recently logging its billionth view. In her videos, not only does she educate people on what acne is, but she features footage of all sorts of skin issues erupting, including blackheads, pustules, cysts, and more. (There’s a “graphic and shocking” warning that precedes her videos—fair warning!)
