Each month I would try my best to avoid ending up in a heap on the floor of the lab. I would request the one room with a chair where I could lie all the way back and put my feet up. I’d take slow, deep breaths until the nurse removed the needle, wait a few more minutes for good measure before sitting up, and then barring any lightheadedness, I’d breathe a sigh of relief that I wouldn’t be back in the chair for another 30 days. Still, on more than one occasion I wouldn’t make it further than the waiting room before I’d slump down into a chair, putting head between my knees until the dizziness would pass.
Patients who are treated with isotretinoin will need to be enrolled in the iPLEDGE (http://www.ipledgeprogram.com) program as will the physician prescriber and the pharmacy provider. There are a variety of other potential side effects produced by the drug. Isotretinoin, however, when used in appropriate patients, is a unique drug in that it offers a safe and effective “cure” for a noninfectious disease.

From July, 2011 – June, 2012 NHI numbers were recorded in 91% of all isotretinoin dispensings compared to only 60% prior.25 Recording of NHI numbers allows analysis of medicine use to occur.

Buckle down and force yourself to wash your face with a pH balanced cleanser of 5.5 when you wake up in the morning and before going to bed at night. As tired or busy as you may be, taking the extra few minutes to cleanse your skin will reduce your acne significantly.
