Most of the herbs used in the herbal treatment of acne fall under Ayurvedic treatment. Get at least eight hours of sleep. Sleeping kills two birds with one stone, as it helps to relax your body as well as detoxify it. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, chances are your skin hasn’t had the time or ability to renew its skin cells. Regulate your sleep cycle by going to bed at a consistent time every night and sleeping for a minimum of eight hours at least.[1]

Various gels, lotions and creams are used to treat acne. Different preparations work in different ways. The following briefly describes the different types. However, always read the leaflet in the packet, because such things as how to apply it and precautions vary between different preparations. One general point is that you should apply topical treatments to all the affected area of skin and not just to each spot.

To instantly make bumps look and feel better, use a deeply hydrating moisturizer. Apply on rough spots right after bathing when skin is still damp to seal the moisture in. This will definitely help soften the feel and look of bumps, though keep in mind that it won’t help prevent the condition from forming if you’re genetically prone.

It is important to distinguish this form of shoulder acne from folliculitis, which occurs in hair follicles, especially after shaving the shoulders. It can also occur after use of a hot tub or by wearing a wetsuit. Folliculitis is more likely to be painful than acne and is caused by a different microorganism. Folliculitis causes raised swellings with a yellow center, and acne does not. Consulting a doctor is usually necessary for treatment of folliculitis.

Sometimes skin cells clog up these follicles, also known as pores. With the pores clogged, sebum gets trapped inside. Skin bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) starts to grow inside the pores, too. The bacteria cause inflammation. When the clogged pore bursts open, all the sebum and P. acnes bacteria spill onto the surface of the skin, causing breakouts.

Most patients with mild acne can be treated with topical treatment (gels, solutions and lotions) that can be obtained over-the-counter in New Zealand without prescription. Most people just use topical agents for facial skin as they can be difficult to apply to one’s back. Extra vitamins and minerals have not been proved to help.

Model Kendall Jenner inspired acne sufferers the world over when she appeared on the red carpet at the Golden Globes in January. Kendall’s acne was clearly visible beneath her make-up, with the star later taking to Twitter to tell fans not to let the skin ailment stop you. Acne is a common skin condition, characterised by spots, oily and sometimes painful skin. There are many different treatments available and their suitability depends on the severity of the acne. Here, Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Sharon Wong gives her tips for best treating the condition…

When treating acne To repair the damage done to the dermis(skin cells) the skin forms new collagen fibers. Collagen is the fibrous protein that gives the skin its strength and flexibility. But this repairing that is scar dont looks as smooth

The first lasers to be used were aggressive, 100% resurfacing; which means they would treat the whole skin area, leading to open healing and prolonged recovery time and redness. Those drawbacks led to the advent of fractionated lasers.

Drugs: Some medications may cause or worsen acne, such as those containing iodides, bromides, or oral or injected steroids (either the medically prescribed prednisone [Deltasone, Orasone, Prednicen-M, Liquid Pred] or the steroids that bodybuilders or athletes sometimes take). Other drugs that can cause or aggravate acne are anticonvulsant medications and lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). Most cases of acne, however, are not drug related.

Sugar: You may have already suspected that sugar is related to breakouts. Some studies now suggest that there may be a link. This doesn’t mean that if you eat a cookie you’re going to get a pimple. It comes down to how much sugar you’re eating in a day—particularly at any one time. If you consume a soda and a candy bar, for example, you’re likely spiking your blood sugar levels, and you could break out hours later. If you suspect sugar could be a culprit for you, try to cut back even by one sugary drink a day to notice a difference.

As if acne on your face wasn’t bad enough, pimples have a tendency to pop up on other parts of your body as well – particularly your chest and back. While annoying to deal with, it’s relatively fine in the fall and winter, when the cold weather ensures you’ll be covering up those areas anyway. But now that it’s getting warmer and bathing suit weather is fast approaching, you’re probably a little freaked out about how to get rid of back and chest acne.

Depression: Many people who have acne suffer from more than low self-esteem. Acne can lead to a medical condition called depression. The depression can be so bad that people think about what it would be like to commit suicide. Many studies have found that teens who believe that they have “bad” acne were likely to think about committing suicide.

If you try a doctor-prescribed acne regimen for at least a month and you’re still experiencing severe breakouts, there’s one treatment that’s very effective — but it has significant side effects. Isotretinoin (commonly referred to as Accutane, a brand that was taken off the market in 2009) can help with almost all types of acne, though it may be slightly less likely to clear up hormonal acne, says Zeichner. A type of oral retinoid, isotretinoin works by “significantly reducing oil production from your sebaceous glands, which subsequently reduces the amount of P. acnes bacteria on the skin,” says Zeichner. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect. (If you’re interested in finding out more, ask your doctor about the isotretinoin brands that are available now, such as Claravis, Amnesteem, Myorisan, Zenatane, and Absorica.) Zeichner says that all patients who finish a course of isotretinoin (typically lasting five months, but many physicians recommend a longer treatment plan) will be “significantly better than when they started.” For the majority of patients, that can mean 100 percent clear skin. “Approximately 20 percent of patients will need a second course, 5 percent will need a third course, and one percent will need more than three,” says Zeichner. But even if you end up in the not-completely-clear camp, the post-treatment breakouts you experience will likely be “much more manageable with traditional treatments, like topicals and oral antibiotics,” says Zeichner.

5 Has a low potential for abuse relative to those in schedule 4. Has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. Abuse may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to those in schedule 4.

A final tip is to see a dermatologist if what you’ve been trying does not appear to be working. The AAD makes a point of noting that virtually every acne case is treatable and most cases can be treated successfully. You can always visit the AAD website, AcneNet, for more information.

Antibiotics do not address the other causative factors in acne and may take several weeks or months to clear it up. Antibiotics are often used in combination with other drugs that “unclog” follicles. Many oral antibiotics for acne should not be used during pregnancy.

The toothpaste that you use every morning to clean your teeth also can be used to treat pimples quickly. It is most effective when used following the ice remedy. You must use white toothpaste; avoid using gel toothpaste.

Regular foundation can help smooth your skin and even out skin tone. Using the best foundation for acne prone skin can also provide much needed emotional boost from looking your best.. After cleansing and moisturizing, use a foundation designed for combination or oily skin to prevent acne. Make sure that it is labeled “non-acnegenic” and “non-comedogenic.”

This is the only acne treatment that attacks all four causes of acne — excess oil production, clogged pores in the skin, too much of the bacteria P. acnes, and inflammation. This makes isotretinoin very effective.

Combination medications are exactly what they sound like—acne medications that harness the power of two acne-fighting ingredients in one bottle. These are generally made up of topical retinoid or benzoyl peroxide treatments along with topical antibiotics.

“Eating chocolate or a lot of junk food doesn’t by itself seem to cause acne, but not having a balanced diet and eating too many refined carbs can cause problems,” says Albert Lefkovits, MD, director of the Park Avenue Center for Advanced Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology in New York City. In a 2007 study, Australian researchers found that people who followed a low-glycemic index (GI) diet (which is low in refined carbohydrates like those found in white bread) had a 22% decrease in acne lesions, compared a control group that ate more high-GI foods. Scientists suspect that raised insulin levels from the carbs may trigger a release of hormones that inflame follicles and increase oil production. (Check out this handy list of low glycemic foods.)
