The first three types listed are all types of the most common form of acne – acne vulgaris. The non-inflammatory kind is the mildest of these types and is usually characterized by the appearance of whiteheads or blackheads. The inflammatory type is a moderate form that is characterized by the formation of papules, pustules, and macules.

A hypertrophic scar or keloid appears more raised. It appears like a small mass of tissue that’s slightly raised and bumpy. It’s rare for a scar like this to grow larger on the face, but it has been observed to do so, more commonly, when found on torso.
As mentioned above, genetics are thought to play a major role in your susceptibility to acne. However, using the best acne products and taking good care of your skin can help you prevent worsening acne and scars later in life. Which means acne treatments are not one size fits all. “people fall into the trap of not knowing how to treat their specific type,” Renée says about the no. 1 misunderstanding people have about their skin. “And determining the cause can be tricky especially if you are someone who typically eats well and takes good care of their skin.” While your impulse might be to dry all of your skin out, it’s important to remember that acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin. Focus on incorporating calming products along with bacteria-reducing ingredients to address your concerns.
Using home remedies such as lemon juice, olive oil, vitamin E oil, and baking soda will prevent dead skin build-up and slowly fade away even deep acne scars. Diligently using these remedies is essential to get rid of the deeper scars.
Retinoids: Medicines structurally similar to vitamin A are useful in preventing several types of acne lesions. Topical retinoids are effective in treating the noninflammatory types of acne (blackheads and whiteheads).

Folliculitis: Pimples can occur on other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, buttocks, or legs. These represent not acne but inflamed follicles. If these don’t go away on their own, doctors can prescribe oral or external antibiotics, generally not the same ones used for acne.

During pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, estrogen and progesterone levels increase therefore increasing the skin’s production of sebum. The risk of getting acne during pregnancy is higher; however, it is rather difficult to predict who will suffer from more severe acne flare-ups, and which women will “glide” through this period without acne problems. One risk factor is whether you have a history of acne or experienced acne flares at the start of your menstrual cycle. If so, you may have a higher risk of experiencing acne during your pregnancy. If you do not develop acne during the first trimester, it’s unlikely you’ll have this problem at all since it is rare to get acne in the second or third trimesters.
When you first feel a pimple forming, try makeup artist Matin Maulawizada’s trick: Press it with a cotton swab soaked in witch hazel, then with another one soaked in eye drops containing a gentle anti-inflammatory, like Visine Maximum Redness Relief Formula. Dab a medicated concealer, like BareMineral’s Blemish Remedy Concealer. Once a pimple is in full bloom, it can cast a shadow, so try a different method: Brush on a mattifying primer, like the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, before applying your foundation. Then pat on an opaque, full-coverage concealer. (We love the Reader’s Choice Award-winning Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer). Set it with loose translucent powder. If you have acne scars you want to cover up, reach for an eyeliner brush. “It’s perfect for maneuvering inside depressions,” says makeup artist Joanna Schlip. Run the brush over a stick concealer and coat the inside of the scar. This hides the shadows that make these scars appear more recessed. Then you can follow with a mattifying liquid foundation.
Doxycycline is another of the tetracyclines that is equally effective in treating acne. It comes in generic versions and also as the branded Doryx and Acticlate which are easier on the stomach. Originally FDA approved for the treatment of rosacea, Oracea is a non antibiotic dose of doxycycline that is often used as an acne treatment, as well. Taken orally, it can be used as solo therapy or in combination with a topical acne treatment regimen. More severe cases of acne might need higher doses of doxycycline, but since Oracea is not an antibiotic, many patients can be “down-graded” to Oracea after improvement and it is suitable for longterm use as it does not cause antibiotic resistance.
Nodules and cysts. These are larger infections of the hair follicles. They extend deeper into the skin, forming firm, deep bumps and swellings. Like pimples, they are caused by increased sebum production and bacterial growth, which cause irritation and redness.
Long used to treat high blood pressure, prescription Aldactone (spironolactone) is now getting a second life as a treatment for hormonal acne. The drug (a tablet taken orally) blocks receptors of the hormone androgen, helping to limit the testosterone surges that can prompt pimples.
There are prescription treatments for acne, but not wants to go this route. Fortunately, there’s some evidence that changing the types of foods you eat and the nutrients in your diet may be of benefit. Here are some ways to manage acne naturally.
Dermatologists also recommend taking precautions. If a person taking isotretinoin has any symptoms of depression or another mental health condition, the person must stop taking isotretinoin right away.
HRT: Women who take HRT often report improved complexion as one of the benefits. Supplemental estrogen provided by HRT not only helps your skin retain elasticity, it can also prevent blemishes and acne. Contrary to this, for some women, HRT can trigger an acne problem. It would, however, be extremely rare for a healthcare professional to prescribe HRT for a dermatological issue.
Check all of your skin, not just sun-exposed areas. If you notice anything unusual, including any change in shape, colour or size of a spot, or the development of a spot, visit your doctor as soon as…
Birth control pill (females only): A birth control pill can be an effective part of an acne treatment plan. When treating severe acne, a birth control pill may be used along with an antibiotic or a medicine called spironolactone (spy-ren-no-lac-tone) to get the acne under control.
However, the most up-to-date data shows no obvious changes in prescribing behaviour between the highest and lowest decile socioeconomic areas, and between ethnicities (Figure 1 and 2).25 This is despite increased access to isotretinoin via general practice. This may suggest that the actual or perceived severity of acne is lower in these groups, and therefore treatment is not sought.
“Over-the-counter products can work in many cases,” said William Huang, MD, another Wake Forest Baptist dermatologist. “But no matter what the TV ads may say, they take time, usually six to eight weeks. You’re not going to have that overnight, ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ phenomenon. That can be frustrating, especially for teenagers. Acne can cause them a lot of stress and affect their emotional well-being, so they want something that works right away, but we don’t have anything like that.”
Androgens are hormones that are considered to be the primary cause of acne development as they stimulate the sebaceous glands which in turn produce excess amounts of oil. For acne treatment to be effective, it is paramount to decrease the action of androgens. One of the most common methods employed is the use of antiandrogens, drugs that stop the action of androgens on oil glands. Learn more…
Castor oil cleanses the skin and pulls out all the dirt, impurities, and even the bacteria (19). The ricinoleic acid present in it conditions the skin and makes it softer and healthier (20). Cystic acne can also be effectively treated with this oil.
X Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.
Try to avoid eating too much junk food as it may be one factor which could cause acne on your back to occur. Furthermore, scratching your back could cause acne to spread so this should be avoided too.
Recent studies conducted by dermatologists in 2012 show that green tea has a positive impact on acne, when applied externally. Green tea has an antioxidant known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). It was observed that EGCG reduced inflammation, sebum production and bacterial growth on pimple-prone skin. Place 2 teaspoons of organic tea leaves in 1/2 cup of fresh boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes; strain the leaves and let the mixture cool. Then use a cotton pad to apply it on your face. You may also put it inside a spray bottle and spray it on. Leave it on overnight.
