Herbal therapies such as tea tree oil, and topical and oral ayurvedic compounds seem to be well tolerated; however, there are limited data about their efficacy and safety in treating acne.3 One clinical trial showed that topical tea tree oil was effective but had a slower onset of action than traditional topical agents.43 The Cochrane Collaboration is undertaking a systematic review of the effects of treatments in the management of acne that are currently considered complementary or alternative.

4. Moisturise the skin with a light gel-based moisturiser that is “non-comedogenic” i.e. prevents the formation of blackheads. Even oily skin needs moisturising as oils do not equate to hydration. 1. For starters, don’t pop your pimples or spread their bacteria. Like we discussed above, facial scrubs with granular particles or microbeads spread bacteria across the face, causing more acne. So do facial brushes, which can also irritate cystic acne, so avoid using your facial brush if you have severe, active breakouts.
While the last decade has seen an onslaught of new birth control pills and products, according to WebMD, there are currently only three pills that have been approved by the FDA for acne treatment: Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Estrostep, and YAZ. These three types of pill are considered combination oral contraceptives, which means they contain both progesterone and estrogen.
Similar to the above natural acne remedies, these acne treatments can be inexpensive and worth giving a try. Best of all, these use products you probably already have in your household, like apple cider vinegar and toothpaste. Use home remedies for acne with caution if you have cystic acne, open sores, or inflammatory acne, which are best treated with medical supervision.
There are prescription treatments for acne, but not everyone wants to go this route. Fortunately, there’s some evidence that changing the types of foods you eat and the nutrients in your diet may be of benefit. Here are some ways to manage acne naturally.
