Honestly, I’ve only had almost-perfect skin when I was using a harsh prescription cream (would never do that again), and at times when I have been overall healthy (mind, diet, lifestyle habits). Meaning, I have never noticed a significant difference related to products or food. I went on an elimination diet a few years ago, and was eating so cleanly– no processed foods whatsoever, no gluten, no refined sugars, no meat/dairy. And cruising through the aisles at the drugstore, you’ll find it as the active ingredient on the majority of products labeled “acne wash” or “spot treatment.” Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that works by dissolving excess oil and gently exfoliating away dead skin cells. Salicylic also has anti-inflammatory properties to help with inflamed cystic breakouts that can occur when blockages deep in the hair follicles rupture beneath the skin. It’s best to apply this ingredient as a toner, moisturizer, or leave-on spot treatment instead of a face wash to give it time to do its work. And keep in mind, salicylic acid can dry out the skin if over-applied, so maybe choose only one product with the ingredient to use every day.

A review published in the Archives of Dermatological Research found evidence that sleep deprivation, stress and other aspects of “modern life” are linked to adult female acne. The researchers point out that “Modern life presents many stresses including urban noises, socioeconomic pressures and light stimuli. Women are especially affected by stress during daily routine. Women also have a higher risk of developing psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. Sleep restriction is added to these factors, with several negative consequences on health, including on hormonal secretion and the immune system.” (7)

What we do know is that the drug ultimately reduces inflammation and makes pores less hospitable to bacteria, Kirby said. It depends on the severity of the acne and how high patients and doctors decide to crank up the dosage, but the average length of treatment is four to six months. While a higher dosage, within safe limits, can reduce the amount of time on the drug, it can also make the side effects more intense.

Oral antibiotics have been shown to be effective in reducing the number of inflammatory lesions (52% to 67% reduction), but this is based on limited evidence.3 Higher doses can be tried if a patient seeks better control. Doxycycline and minocycline are considered more effective than tetracycline.29 Erythromycin is reserved for patients in whom tetracyclines are contraindicated (e.g., pregnant women and children under nine years of age), although the development of resistance to erythromycin is more common than with the other antibiotics.23

Investigators have also focused on a low-glycemic diet to avoid stress from high-carbohydrate diets and to reduce insulin levels. A study found that 12 weeks of a high-protein, low–glycemic load diet decreased the total amount of acne lesions, and this may lead to dermatologists recommending the South Beach Diet to patients with acne. [19] However, guideline groups have not found benefit in acne treatment or control with dietary restrictions. [29]

A hypertrophic scar or keloid  appears more raised. It appears like a small mass of tissue that’s slightly raised and bumpy. It’s rare for a scar like this to grow larger on the face, but it has been observed to do so, more commonly, when found on torso.

I tried all of these things and they just made my fussy sensitive skin worse. Retin-A dried my skin out to the point that it was flaking off and what was underneath was raw or even worse- open sores. Even with all of that drama, I still had horrible acne!

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is not an acne scar, but a red, pink, brown or tan skin discoloration where acne has previously flared up. It will usually disappear on its own in a year or so. Many skin lightening products claim to help reduce the visibility of these acne “scars.” Their active ingredient, hydroquinone, works to slow melanin production and can reduce dark brown marks, but melanin isn’t the cause of red and pink acne discolorations. A better option is to use the best foundation for acne prone skin you can find to hide the marks until they naturally fade away.

“You need to apply medication to the entire affected area that tends to break out, instead of spot treating. With spot treating, you haven’t addressed the area next to it, where another pimple could be brewing, Berson says.
