It is important to seek dermotological advice, even if symptoms are mild or in their early stages as effective medical treatment can prevent the condition getting worse, and minimise the risk of scarring.

For mild acne, Dr. Wong recommends: “Face washes and leave-on creams that contain Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid can be very effective. These are key anti-acne ingredients in products which are available just over the counter. Using those things stand alone would probably be effective for the milder form of acne.”

With millions of people affected by acne every year, the American Academy of Dermatology reports acne is the most prevalent skin condition in the United States—with many sufferers who are well past puberty. For those battling regular breakouts, studies show acne isn’t purely a cosmetic issue, but can also contribute to poor self-esteem or depression. “As an adult, there is no such thing as mild acne,” says Doris Day, MD, of Day Dermatology and Aesthetics. “Every pimple is an insult and lasts too long.” (Here are sneaky reasons you’re having an acne breakout.) Fortunately, between classic methods and continually emerging dermatological technology, it is possible to achieve clear skin.

The three-piece set doesn’t come with an SPF, but Paula’s Choice has one in the line, the Clear Ultra-Light Daily Fluid SPF 30+. “Sun protection is really important, especially with acneic skin,” says Townsend. “In many cases, stronger acne products can make the skin photosensitive to the sun.” This isn’t your normal gloppy white sunscreen. Its fluid formula slips over tender skin, doesn’t need a ton of rubbing in, and also leaves a mattifying finish.

Monitoring of LFTs is recommended during treatment. This is usually only necessary in patients with pre-existing liver disease, co-morbidities or those receiving high-dose treatment, however, guidelines recommend monitoring all patients prescribed isotretinoin. Cessation of treatment is not required in patients with mild increases in liver enzyme levels. If liver enzymes are > 2.5 times the upper limit of normal, it is recommended to cease isotretinoin and investigate further. Levels usually return to normal within two weeks of cessation.

PCOS is most often managed with prescription drugs like birth control and the diabetic drug Metformin, but there is another way. My mission is to help women take control of their own health and life and overall happiness. By altering your lifestyle and following my 5 Fundamentals of a PCOS Diva, you can reduce your PCOS symptoms naturally. After I started living the PCOS Diva lifestyle, I became pregnant naturally at the age of 37 and have a healthy little girl after having 2 boys, both conceived through fertility are a mild form of acne that appear as unsightly, open pores that appear darker than the skin surrounding them. They get their dark appearance from a skin pigment called melanin, which oxidizes and turns black when it’s exposed to the air. Blackheads aren’t caused by dirt, but by sebum (oil) and dead skin cells blocking the pore. If the pore remains open, it becomes a blackhead; if it’s completely blocked and closed, it turns into a whitehead.

Try a light treatment. Unlike painful laser treatments, light treatments use milder pulses of light fired off by a specialized wand to help kill bacteria. Certain colors of light (including red, green, and blue) have shown to have a positive effect on killing acne. Ask your dermatologist if getting a light treatment is a good choice for you.[10]

Photodynamic therapy. “In this technique, we apply a prescription liquid to the patient’s face, chest, or back — wherever the acne is — and then apply a light or laser to activate the medicine,” Taub says. “Not only does the medication kill bacteria — which is less important, because bacteria will come back — but over a few months, it also reduces the size and activity of the oil glands.”

A new, big trend in acne treatments over the past year has been stick-on dots. Some brands, like Nexcare Acne Absorbing Covers, aren’t medicated; instead, the clear, absorbent, sterile patches (which feel more like gel than a Band-Aid) dry out the zit like a sponge. Bonus: They’ll keep you from picking at it! Despite the fact that they contain no actual medicine, the Nexcare covers have a perfect five-star rating on drugstore.com and a cult following. Meanwhile, many brands do medicate their acne dots, like Peter Thomas Roth’s new Acne-Clear Invisible Dots. These invisible stick-on patches contain salicylic acid, tea tree oil, and hyaluronic acid to disinfect and clear clogged pores.

Another potential skin saboteur is sugar, because it raises your insulin level. More and more evidence shows that insulin may boost those oil-triggering male hormones, Dr. Schultz explains. Stick to low-glycemic foods—ones that have complex carbs like whole grains, which break down slower in the body and cause less of an insulin spike. Your health will be better for it, too.

Eat healthily. Foods that are highly processed and contain a lot of oils greatly increase the amount of acne on your body. Getting the proper amount of nutrients from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and protein help your skin to regenerate faster and limit unnecessary oil production. When at all possible, avoid foods that are processed or contain a lot of sugar (think junk foods).

Before deciding which treatment to use, it’s important to identify the symptoms that are causing concern. Treatments for mild to moderate acne tend to address one or more of the four issues attributed to the condition. They work by:

Relax your body and mind. High stress levels lead to increased sebum production, so do your mind and your skin a favor by giving yourself some time to relax. Try taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, meditating, or practicing yoga and watch your skin transform in response.

February 3, 2017 – In September 2016, the FDA released a studystating that triclosan, an antibacterial agent, is no longer recognized as safe or effective. Triclosan shows up in the cleanser of our top pick, Paula’s Choice Clear Regular Strength System. We’ve reached out to inquire if Paula’s Choice will be updating its cleanser formula. In the meantime, if you’re worried, go for our runner-up, Proactiv+ 3-Step System.

The diagnosis of acne vulgaris is primarily clinical.4 History and physical examination can help determine if there is an underlying cause of the acne, such as an exacerbating medication or endocrinologic abnormality causing hyperandrogenism (e.g., polycystic ovarian syndrome). Other dermatologic manifestations of androgen excess include seborrhea, hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia. Endocrinologic testing is not ordered routinely for women with regular menstrual cycles.2,3 Older women, especially those with new-onset acne and other signs of androgen excess (e.g., hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, menstrual irregularities, infertility), should be tested for androgen excess with measurements of total and free serum testosterone, dihydroepiandrosterone, and luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone levels.5 Pelvic ultrasonography may show the presence of polycystic ovaries.5 In prepubertal children with acne, signs of hyperandrogenism include early-onset accelerated growth, pubic or axillary hair, body odour, genital maturation and advanced bone age.

Castor oil may be a great choice for treating mild acne since it provides moisturization to the skin while helping the skin produce less sebum, which can cause acne if in excess. It also helps reduce inflammation that may be caused by acne. (21)

The Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution is mostly water, but its 2 percent salicylic acid is enough to eat through oil and slough off the dead skin cells clogging your pores — and it boasts a higher concentration than nearly every other kit we looked at. It sloshes out quickly (so have your cotton balls at the ready), but stroking it over your face and neck per the instructions is pure heaven. It’s cooling on the skin and leaves a lingering tingle that never turns into a burn. Sodium hyaluronate, the super-moisturizing humectant we fell in love with in our review on the best face moisturizer, also caught our eye sitting smack dab in the middle of the ingredients list.

Sulfur has been used in treating acne for thousands of years, and in the 1950s, it became available in a foam product designed for direct application to the skin. Can sulfur work on acne? Sulfur dries out the skin, consequently drying out and shrinking pimples. It tends to be gentler than Benzoyl Peroxide treatments, and is less likely to dehydrate the skin, which would result in further irritation.

  1. Papules and pustules (the technical name for pimples) which cause small or medium sized bumps on the skin that are round, red and don’t always have a visible “head”. These are caused by “moderate” types of acne and are not as severe as cysts or nodules. (5)
