Acne medications work by reducing oil production, speeding up skin cell turnover, fighting bacterial infection or reducing inflammation — which helps prevent scarring. With most prescription acne drugs, you may not see results for four to eight weeks, and your skin may get worse before it gets better. It can take many months or years for your acne to clear up completely.
This is the most important reason for pimple formation in today’s generation. Eating a lot of fried and processed food triggers your oil glands and produces sebum, which leads to pimples, blackheads, and breakouts.
Lipid levels should be monitored, especially in patients with elevated pre-treatment levels, risk factors or prolonged courses of isotretinoin. Consider dose reduction or cessation of treatment if fasting triglycerides >6 mmol/L. Dietary advice should include avoidance of alcohol and sugary drinks. Lipid levels are likely to return to baseline one month after treatment finishes.
It is a myth that people get acne because they don’t wash enough. Gentle washing is important, but too much washing can irritate the whiteheads and blackheads, causing them to be more infected and making more pimples.

some form of systemic (oral) medication to control this condition. The goal of therapy is to minimize scarring. The choice of drug with which to begin treatment depends on the experience and preferences of the physician and patient. It is often warranted to try oral antibiotics initially (doxycycline [Doryx, Oracea, Monodox], sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim [Bactrim, Sulfatrim], minocycline [Minocin]) for a limited period of time supplemented by a topical retinoid drug (Retin A, Differin, Tazerotene). Antibiotics probably owe much of their effectiveness to their anti-inflammatory characteristics rather than their antibacterial attributes.
Cinnamon and Honey Mask: Mix two tablespoons of raw honey, one teaspoon of coconut oil and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Smooth over face. Keep away from eyes, as the cinnamon can be an irritant. Relax for 5–10 minutes and gently remove with damp cloth. Honey and cinnamon used together helps to fight acne because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
Alternative and integrative medicine approaches used in the treatment of acne include fish oil, brewer’s yeast, probiotics, oral zinc and topical tea tree oil. More research is needed to establish the potential effectiveness and long-term safety of these and other integrative approaches, such as biofeedback and traditional Chinese medicine. Talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of specific treatments before you try them.
These are the products that Dr. Lortscher suggests you use to improve the appearance of “permanent” acne scars. (You should also talk to your dermatologist about the best plan for your specific case.)
Triglyceride levels can be elevated due to isotretinoin treatment.17 Several reasons for this have been proposed, including down-regulation of lipases and changes in gene expression leading to increased antagonism of triglyceride metabolism.23 Trigylceride levels > 9 mmol/L are associated with pancreatitis. A reduction in dose or cessation of treatment should be considered if triglyceride levels rise above 6 mmol/L. Isotretinoin must be stopped if pancreatitis occurs.17
