Lemongrass oil, like the other oils mentioned above, possesses antimicrobial properties and can eliminate the bacteria that is aggravating the acne (17). It also acts a skin toner and astringent and balances the sebum production.
Stress and a diet full of garbage can take their toll on your skin. So can excess drinking. It stands to reason that you should therefore, drink lots of water, get enough sleep, don’t eat pizza three times a day, and get moderate exercise.
When I cut gluten out of my diet 13 years ago, I discovered by accident that my bumps went away! I had those irritating bumps since I was a child and was so happy to be rid of them! My daughter cut gluten out of her diet a couple of years ago and her bumps went away too. My son also has them over most of his body, but he refuses to cut out gluten 🙁

Isotretinoin greatly reduces the amount of oil (sebum) made by your sebaceous glands. It works very well and usually clears spots even in severe cases. However, it is normally used only on the advice of a specialist after other treatments have been tried first. This is because there is a risk of serious side-effects with isotretinoin tablets.
Retinoids and retinoid-like drugs. These come as creams, gels and lotions. Retinoid drugs are derived from vitamin A and include tretinoin (Avita, Retin-A, others), adapalene (Differin) and tazarotene (Tazorac, Avage). You apply this medication in the evening, beginning with three times a week, then daily as your skin becomes used to it. It works by preventing plugging of the hair follicles.
Probiotics: These have been found to reduce inflammation in the gut, which may help reduce acne. According to a 2011 study, intestinal microflora may affect inflammation throughout the body, which in turn, can affect acne breakouts. Since pre and probiotics can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, scientists believe they may help reduce acne breakouts. “There appears to be more than enough supportive evidence to suggest that gut microbes, and the integrity of gastrointestinal tract itself, are contributing factors in the acne process,” the scientists wrote. To get more probiotics in your diet, try yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, dark chocolate, microalgae, miso soup, pickles, tempeh, kimchi, and kombucha tea.
Wash your hair every day. While shampooing your hair so often may dry it out, it’s likely that an oily scalp is causing your forehead breakouts. Your pimples may even worsen if your hair rests on your forehead. If you pull your hair back into a ponytail, you could see an improvement. Avoid using greasy hair gels, mousse and other products, because they can clog pores.

Since 2009 the number of prescriptions dispensed per patient prescribed isotretinoin has decreased by approximately 15%.24 The reason for this is unclear, but may be due to larger doses per prescription, lower overall doses of isotretinoin or increased rates of medicine cessation.
A hypertrophic scar or keloid appears more raised. It appears like a small mass of tissue that’s slightly raised and bumpy. It’s rare for a scar like this to grow larger on the face, but it has been observed to do so, more commonly, when found on torso.
Protect your skin after undergoing any acne scar treatments. Always wear creams with the right amount of SPF, (our favorite sunscreen brand is Laroche posay, which holds the patent for the best sun filters… ) follow your doctor’s suggestions when it comes to products and stay away from direct sunlight on your face.
4. Reexamine your diet. As for the diet component, you’ve probably heard the rumors that fried food and dairy products is associated with acne, but do you know why? Sugar, spicy ingredients, dairy and fried foods are all testosterone triggers. Too much testosterone triggers your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Sebum is the natural mixture of wax and oil that helps to keep your skin healthy and moisturized, but too much sebum can clog pores and become a breeding ground for P. acnes bacteria. While going vegan and gluten free won’t solve your problems, being aware of your intake of testosterone triggering food may be helpful in controlling your acne.
Since everyone gets acne at some time, the right time to treat it is when it becomes bothersome or when the potential for scarring develops. This can be when severe acne flares suddenly, for mild acne that just won’t go away, or even when a single pimple decides to show up the week before one’s prom or wedding.
Honestly, I’ve only had almost-perfect skin when I was using a harsh prescription cream (would never do that again), and at times when I have been overall healthy (mind, diet, lifestyle habits). Meaning, I have never noticed a significant difference related to products or food. I went on an elimination diet a few years ago, and was eating so cleanly– no processed foods whatsoever, no gluten, no refined sugars, no meat/dairy. This lasted 3 weeks, and I did not notice much of a difference with my face. Obviously everyone is different, and I’ve realized my main problem is stress. I mean, it could be a lot worse if I ate horribly (I am vegan– not that I noticed much of a difference when I changed my diet– not that it was that bad before), but unfortunately I am one of those people that can’t get an easy fix. Fixing your state of mind, and how you respond to stress, is probably the hardest thing to do. But I’m working on it.

Topical (external) applications: Antibacterial cleansers come in the form of gels, creams, and lotions that are applied to the affected area. The active ingredients that kill surface bacteria include benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and resorcinol. Some brands promoted on the Internet and cable TV (such as ProActiv) are much more costly than identical and sometimes more potent products one can buy in the drugstore.
Yogurt and Honey Mask: Mix one tablespoon of raw honey with one tablespoon of yogurt. Apply to face, paying particular attention to hairline, jawline and other acne prone areas. Relax for 10 minutes and gently wipe off with a damp cloth.
Cystic Acne: The most severe type of acne, cystic acne requires dermatological care and prescription acne medication to treat. Even the best acne products available over the counter are no match for this painful condition in which the area of the outbreak becomes inflamed, but not infected. Cystic acne can result in permanent scarring. However, it’s important to know that all acne lesions can scar. Scarring is related to size, amount of inflammation, genetics and delay in therapy.
