Complementary therapies have been investigated for treating people with acne. Low-quality evidence suggests topical application of tea tree oil or bee venom may reduce the total number of skin lesions in those with acne. Tea tree oil is thought to be approximately as effective as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, but has been associated with allergic contact dermatitis. Proposed mechanisms for tea tree oil’s anti-acne effects include antibacterial action against P. acnes, and anti-inflammatory properties. Numerous other plant-derived therapies have been observed to have positive effects against acne (e.g., basil oil and oligosaccharides from seaweed); however, few studies have been performed, and most have been of lower methodological quality. There is a lack of high-quality evidence for the use of acupuncture, herbal medicine, or cupping therapy for acne.
When you think about it, consistently reaching for your go-to face towel every day is like reusing a dinner napkin over and over again (ew). Using dirty towels can harbor bacteria, and they can even introduce new bacteria to your skin, which may lead to more pimples, explains Karen Hammerman, MD, from Schweiger Dermatology. You should try and use a new face towel every time you wash your face.
Drugs: Some medications may cause or worsen acne, such as those containing iodides, bromides, or oral or injected steroids (either the medically prescribed prednisone [Deltasone, Orasone, Prednicen-M, Liquid Pred] or the steroids that bodybuilders or athletes sometimes take). Other drugs that can cause or aggravate acne are anticonvulsant medications and lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). Most cases of acne, however, are not drug related.
Diet: Being older and hopefully a little wiser or maybe due to the appearance of belly fat, you are probably trying to eat healthier. If you are experiencing menopause acne, you will need to be a little more attentive to your diet. Higher fibre and calcium is required with lower fat and carbohydrates. Experts in the field state that your daily calorie intake should be made up of the following:-
Castor oil may be a great choice for treating mild acne since it provides moisturization to the skin while helping the skin produce less sebum, which can cause acne if in excess. It also helps reduce inflammation that may be caused by acne. (21)
Chemical peel. This procedure uses repeated applications of a chemical solution, such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or retinoic acid. Any improvement in acne is not long lasting, so repeat treatments are usually needed.
Retinoids: these are topically applied and it may take a while before you notice the effects. They may also be slightly irritating to your skin. These should not be used if you are pregnant as there is a great risk of harming the baby.

When you first feel a pimple forming, try makeup artist Matin Maulawizada’s trick: Press it with a cotton swab soaked in witch hazel, then with another one soaked in eye drops containing a gentle anti-inflammatory, like Visine Maximum Redness Relief Formula. Dab a medicated concealer, like BareMineral’s Blemish Remedy Concealer. Once a pimple is in full bloom, it can cast a shadow, so try a different method: Brush on a mattifying primer, like the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, before applying your foundation. If you have acne scars you want to cover up, reach for an eyeliner brush. “It’s perfect for maneuvering inside depressions,” says makeup artist Joanna Schlip. Run the brush over a stick concealer and coat the inside of the scar. This hides the shadows that make these scars appear more recessed. Then you can follow with a mattifying liquid foundation.
Exercise regularly. Exercise reduces stress, improves self-esteem, and causes your brain to release feel good hormones. It is also beneficial for your skin. When you exercise, your blood circulation improves and your pores unclog due to sweat. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate (e.g. brisk walking, swimming) exercise a week or 75 minutes of vigorous (e.g. running, aerobics) exercise a week. Find activities that you enjoy doing.
If your acne is severe, painful, or refusing to get lost, you may just be beyond what an over-the-counter treatment can do. Not only can a professional set you up with the really powerful stuff, but also Fitz Patrick explains that “working closely with an aesthetician or dermatologist means you can keep tweaking a routine to make it work best for you.”
Benzoyl peroxide. For mild acne, you may try, or your doctor may recommend, treatment with a nonprescription drug that contains benzoyl peroxide. It’s believed that this compound works by destroying the bacteria associated with acne. It usually takes at least four weeks to work and it must be used continuously to keep acne at bay. Like many over-the-counter and prescription products, it does not affect sebum production or the way the skin follicle cells are shed, and when you stop using it, the acne comes back. It is available in many forms: creams, lotions, washes, and gels. Benzoyl peroxide can cause dry skin and can bleach fabrics, so take care when applying it. Consider wearing an old T-shirt to bed if you are applying it to your back or chest overnight.
Do a Google search for “how to get rid of acne fast” and you’ll see plenty of websites telling you to eat better for clear skin. But are there really foods that cause acne, or is that an old wives’ tale? Dermatologist Hilary Baldwin, MD, of the Acne Treatment and Research Centre in Morristown, New Jersey, says the answer isn’t really simple at all. “The simple answer is, we don’t know. So far studies have suggested that high-glycemic index diets (those with lots of white foods like potatoes, pasta, bread, rice and sweets), as well as diets high in skim-milk dairy products and whey protein supplements might be associated with worsening of existing acne but are less likely to cause acne,” Baldwin says.

Steam: steam has the ability to open up the pores and then flush out the dead skin which clogs them. Fill a bowl with warm water, have your face over the bowl with a towel over your head so that you feel the steam on your face. Do not touch the hot water. If you can stay there for thirty minutes, then do so, after which you should apply your usual moisturiser.
Dr. Wong advises people against squeezing and picking their spots. “All that does is deepens the level of trauma to the skin,” she reveals. “Any pigmentation or scarring could be made worse by picking or squeezing spots. You should be using the right ingredients in your daily skincare routine and using the right prescription strength medication if you require it.”
The problem with oral Retin-A is that it can cause problems in the liver and central nervous system. It can also overstimulate growth in the human embryo, and cause birth defects if taken during the first month or pregnancy. And a significant problem with Retin-A is that it can stimulate so much growth in the skin that new skin blemishes occur.
Ideally, Daspone should not be the first thing that your doctor prescribes to you for treating acne. It is best prescribed after other acne treatment medications, such as Benzyl Peroxide, Salicylic acid and retinoids have already been tried or are not available. Combining Daspone with retinoid Tazorac will give you better results than using Daspone alone.
Simple alcohols destroy the skin’s barrier, called the acid mantle, which is what keeps your skin’s pH in its happy place (and your skin blemish-free). “A lot of products that are marketed to treat acne do not maintain — or even consider the importance of — the skin’s acid mantle,” explains Natarsha Bimson, a Los Angeles-based aesthetician. “It’s a huge issue.” In one study, even a small, 3 percent alcohol solution applied to skin cells over the course of two days increased cell death by 26 percent — in some acne treatments, like Kate Somerville’s EradiKate, alcohol is one of the first ingredients listed, meaning it’s a largely alcohol-based formula.
