In adolescents, acne flare-ups probably are related to a natural increase in androgen hormones during the teen years. These androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum. Hereditary factors also contribute to the problem.
Zinc is a mineral your body needs in small amounts that not everyone gets enough of, especially vegetarians. That’s because zinc is most abundant in red meat, organ meats and seafood, although whole grain foods and nuts are decent sources. Some research shows that acne sufferers have lower zinc levels than those without the disease and that taking zinc supplements may help. Unfortunately, zinc supplements can interfere with the absorption of other minerals like copper, so it’s important to take zinc under a doctor’s care. The other way to get the benefits is to eat more foods rich in zinc.

4. Reexamine your diet. As for the diet component, you’ve probably heard the rumors that fried food and dairy products is associated with acne, but do you know why? Sugar, spicy ingredients, dairy and fried foods are all testosterone triggers. Too much testosterone triggers your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Sebum is the natural mixture of wax and oil that helps to keep your skin healthy and moisturized, but too much sebum can clog pores and become a breeding ground for P. acnes bacteria. While going vegan and gluten free won’t solve your problems, being aware of your intake of testosterone triggering food may be helpful in controlling your acne.
I used turmeric and milk and It really helps. Also if u decide to use honey make sure its 100% natural and pure with no added sugar. If u decide to use toothpaste make sure its white. Also don’t use lemon juice if u have sensitive skin as it will cause irritation.

OTC Medications: There are different types of over the counter (OTC) medications to get rid of acne. OTC medication doesn’t require doctor’s prescription and easily buy at pharmacy. Most OTC medication are applied to the skin. Common active ingredients found in OTC are:
Researchers have found a relationship between stress and acne flare-ups. In response to stress our bodies produce more androgens (male hormone). These hormones stimulate the oil glands and hair follicles in the skin, which can lead to acne.

Patients with mild acne can be treated with topical therapies; however, those with moderate to severe acne will require systemic therapy. Oral antibiotic treatment, hormonal therapies and isotreretinoin are the mainstay systemic therapies for acne.
Acne is a chronic condition and the most common skin problem in the United States.2 It affects both men and women, and can happen at any age.3 It is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed red pimples—all of which can go by the endearing term, “zits.”4,5

The best way to fix them: This is where the classic zit treatments come into play. “Topical medications are the best way to treat a lesion like this,” says Jennifer Chwalek, M.D., a dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in NYC. “Benzoyl peroxide-, salicylic acid-, or sulfur-based products can help to dry it up.” She prefers salicylic acid over benzoyl peroxide for these, since the latter can cause irritation, dryness, and even post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a.k.a. dark spots) in those with darker skin tones. Retinol works well for these, too.
Vitamin A (retinol) is an antioxidant that affects the health of your skin, brain, and eyes. It helps in the renewal of cells on the skin’s surface and prevents the build-up of dead skin cells, which are usually the cause of clogged pores and acne (62).
Papules and pustules (the technical name for pimples) which cause small or medium sized bumps on the skin that are round, red and don’t always have a visible “head”. These are caused by “moderate” types of acne and are not as severe as cysts or nodules. (5)
Considerations: Cigarette smoking with oral contraceptive use increases the risk of serious heart disease.2There are many negative side effects and positive side effects to taking birth control pills for acne. Talk to your doctor to decide if it is right for you.1-3While it is a widely held belief, evidence does not show a correlation between pregnancy rates and concurrent administration of birth control pills and oral antibiotics. [With the exception of anti-tuberculosis drugs like rifampin.]

“A woman’s hormones are kind of like a beautifully orchestrated symphony,” Richichi says. “In the right balance, a woman’s skin will glow.” She recommends nipping acne in the bud with a low-glycemic diet and cutting out refined carbohydrates, gluten and dairy — all of which spike up your insulin levels and, in turn, your androgen levels (see why here). “To me, acne is a symptom and birth control is just a Band-Aid, because birth control pills don’t address the underlying cause,” she says.
Antibiotic + medicine you apply to the acne: This is often the first treatment recommended for severe acne. Taking an antibiotic can reduce the redness and swelling of acne. The medicine you apply to your skin works on reducing bacteria and clogged pores.
But why does isotretinoin work so well? “We don’t really know,” said Joslyn Kirby, professor of dermatology at Penn State College of Medicine. “That’s part of the research that people at our group at Penn State are doing is looking into some of the changes in the oil glands in the skin called the sebaceous glands, and what is happening to the cells that might explain … this sustained improvement.”
Approximately 50 million individuals have reported symptoms of acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammation of the skin consisting of whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, or nodules. Eighty-five percent of teenagers report having acne, and 12% of adults can continue to have it. Factors causing acne include follicular hyperkeratinization, microbial colonization, sebum production, and inflammatory mechanisms.

Pimples are seriously the skin problem from hell. They hurt when they are forming, and they look and feel disgusting once they are there. But that’s not it. After that pimple is gone, it leaves you with a little parting gift: an acne scar. The discolored mark is blatant proof that you had a pimple, and it was not fun.
Some kids will rarely get a pimple — those lucky ducks! But many kids will get some pimples, even if they take steps to prevent acne. It’s totally normal. In fact, some girls who have a handle on their acne may find that it comes out a few days before they get their periods. This is a common problem called premenstrual acne and is caused by hormonal changes in the body. Boys undergo hormonal changes, too, and may be more likely to suffer from severe forms of acne.
Another drug that has presented many concerns is minocycline. Though it’s a more convenient — albeit expensive — treatment than some, the risks, including two reported deaths, outweigh that convenience. (8)
Lemongrass oil, like the other oils mentioned above, possesses antimicrobial properties and can eliminate the bacteria that is aggravating the acne (17). It also acts a skin toner and astringent and balances the sebum production.
Salicylic acid is another common active ingredient that helps remove excess cells that trap sebum and bacteria inside pores. It can also cause redness and dryness, especially on sensitive skin. Start with a product containing 0.5 percent to 3 percent salicylic acid.
Beware of “miracle cures.” There are no overnight cures for acne. If you hear someone on TV or the radio promising a fast, guaranteed treatment for acne, it’s just hype to get you to buy their product.
