In addition to often causing flaky skin and lips, isotretinoin can cause birth defects, like heart, ear, eye, and nervous-system abnormalities. Any woman who takes it is required to use two types of contraception and to sign a consent form stating that she will not get pregnant while taking the treatment. “Isotretinoin prescriptions are regulated by the government through a program called iPledge,” says Zeichner. “Patients sign consent forms and are regularly monitored throughout treatment.”
Even though you may be antsy to know if your skin care routine is working, it’s important to give a new regimen two or three months before expecting results. (As long as your skin isn’t irritated by a new product, of course–if it is, stop using it.) “Your acne didn’t start overnight, so it won’t disappear overnight either,” cautions Dr. Lee.
From mild to severe, acne can cause painful and unsightly outbreaks on the face, back, chest and even arms. Left untreated, acne can also lead to diminished self-esteem and long-term hyperpigmentation or scarring. Genetics, changing hormone levels, lack of sleep and stress are all contributing factors to acne.
Acne vulgaris is the term for a group of skin conditions that cause most acne pimples. (2) Acne is typically categorized into two main types: non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne. Acne is also described as mild, moderate or severe acne, or sometimes given a grade of either grade I, II, III or IV acne. (3)

Pore strips: Pharmacies now carry, under a variety of brand names, strips which one applies to the nose, forehead, chin, etc., to “pull out” oil from pores. These are, in effect, a do-it-yourself facial. They are inexpensive, safe, and work reasonably well if used properly.

A randomized controlled trial with 128 women showed a reduction in acne lesions of 63% with 35 μg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone and a 59% reduction with 35 μg ethinylestradiol and 2 mg cyproterone acetate.34 Antiandrogen therapy is usually needed for at least three to six months to see significant improvement.
Topical retinoids should be trialled for at least two months before considering another treatment. The initial phase of treatment may cause a mild acne flare, followed by significantly declining acne severity over one to two months.7 Continued, long-term use of retinoids appears to be safe and effective.7
Folliculitis: Pimples can occur on other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, buttocks, or legs. These represent not acne but inflamed follicles. If these don’t go away on their own, doctors can prescribe oral or external antibiotics, generally not the same ones used for acne.
6) Stay out of the sun. A nice suntan may look healthy and often makes acne less noticeable, but the effect is temporary and tanning not only damages your skin but also encourages acne flare-ups. This applies to tanning beds as well. It’s especially important that you avoid too much sun when taking certain anti-acne medications as many medications make your skin more sensitive and thus more easily damaged by UV rays.
When we asked what those types of other ingredients are, Dr. Green said there were no clear answers there either — skin is too subjective. “I think the best answer is to use one that feels good and rubs into your skin well without over-drying it,” he says. The more comfortable it is to apply, the more likely you are to keep up the regimen.
3. Drink more water. Maybe your grandma swears by drinking 2 liters of water a day, or maybe you’ve just heard those red-carpet interviews where celebrities discuss the importance of hydration in their skin care routine. Wherever you heard it, believe it. Skin cells are made primarily of water, and the better hydrated your body is, the healthier your skin will be. This, of course, is not a replacement for a topical moisturizer — water reaches our other organs first, therefore applying an effective moisturizer is the most direct way to keep your skin hydrated.
Makeup products don’t clog up pores and cause pimples, as acne is caused by sebum production that comes from within the skin. While makeup doesn’t necessarily cause pimples, there are products to avoid and much to be said about washing off cosmetics before working out and prior to going to bed.
Lipid levels should be monitored, especially in patients with elevated pre-treatment levels, risk factors or prolonged courses of isotretinoin. Consider dose reduction or cessation of treatment if fasting triglycerides >6 mmol/L. Dietary advice should include avoidance of alcohol and sugary drinks. Lipid levels are likely to return to baseline one month after treatment finishes.
I have found that the skin on my neck is more sensitive than that on my face. If I use anything medicated or more stringent than a mild soap on my neck, it gets inflamed. Then I have acne and red, angry neck skin. I use a mild cleanser on my face and neck every morning and night followed by moisturizer, but I’m not sure what else I can do to treat the acne that won’t otherwise irritate the skin. Any suggestions?

Shower right after you work out to cleanse your skin of the bacteria and sweat that built up while you were getting fit. Staying in your gym clothes increases the chance of clogging your pores with nasty stuff.
I am 11 and my pimples are really bad. I use the toothpaste regularly and the ice one. DO NOT use Colgate toothpaste with the blue and white it burns your face. When I washed it off I had scars and some of my pimples got bigger. It is better to use plain white toothpaste.
