Some medications: phenytoin (which is used for epilepsy), and some steroid creams (used for eczema) are thought to bring out acne. If you suspect a medication to be worsening your acne, do not stop it until you have spoken to your doctor. He may be able to give you a different type of medication.
In severe cases of acne, a visit to dermatologist or skin specialist is required to get rid of acne. Prescribed medication is needed for severe acne. Medication can be in the form of oral antibiotics, cream or lotion.

Diet therapy has been suggested. Fulton et al performed a study on chocolate, having teenage patients with acne consume 1 bar of chocolate each day. Some of the patients improved and some worsened, but the vast majority were unchanged. This study helped decrease the emphasis on diet as a causal factor in acne vulgaris. However, investigators always returned to the diet question. Data suggest that the westernization of certain Native American populations and the related consumption of unhealthy “junk” foods (eg, potato chips, soft drinks) has had a negative impact on general and skin health, resulting in acne flares. Skim milk, compared with full-fat milk, has been found to have a positive association with acne, especially in teenagers and young adults. [68, 69] Causation was not able to be drawn from the case control studies, but the mechanism involving hormonal constituents of the skim milk has been postulated. . Whey protein is a commonly used supplement that has been suggested to worsen acne and should be discontinued if flaring of the condition is associated with its use.
Do not define yourself by how you look. You are so much more than your appearance. Basing your self- worth on your appearance can actually make you feel worse about how you look. Think about all the other qualities, accomplishments, and other positive things (e.g. friends, family, relationships, etc.) in your life. Focusing on those qualities and continuing to develop them will make you a more attractive person from the inside out.
Get more shuteye: By getting more sleep, you relax your body as well as your skin, allowing it to regenerate. Also by sleeping, you are keeping stress at bay which if left unchecked can lead to abnormalities in skin structure and function, making conditions like acne worse. So when someone mentions the term ‘beauty sleep’, I would suggest you take it literally.
The aim of treatment is to clear spots as much as possible and to prevent scarring. There are different types of treatment that work in different ways. A doctor or pharmacist will advise and the treatment they advise will often depend on the severity and type of your acne. Treatments can be those that you apply to the skin (topical) and/or tablets.
Change your laundry detergent. If you have sensitive skin, the laundry detergent you use may be irritating your skin. Try switching detergents. Or try selecting a laundry detergent that is unscented, or even designed for babies with more sensitive skin.
Note: When pus-filled pimples are ready to break, apply a hot towel for a few minutes to encourage the natural bursting process. Inflamed pimples should be opened only by a nurse or doctor using surgical instruments and following antiseptic practices. Squeezing pimples yourself may lead to further problems and perhaps permanent scars.
Toothpaste works wonders! I use Crest Pro Health. I apply it go the infected area before I go to bed, which is usually around 11:00 p.m. and when I wake up n the morning, which is usually at 6:00 a.m. my acne is gone! 🙂
Isotretinoin. If you experience deep, painful cysts and nodules, you may need more aggressive treatment. This oral derivative of vitamin A (commonly referred to by the brand name Accutane) shrinks oil glands and limits how much oil they produce. “This is a fantastic medication that does something no other acne medication does,” says Dr. Lee. After taking it for four to six months, “we say that your acne goes into remission.” Because the drug carries a risk of birth defects, you can absolutely not get pregnant while taking it, so patients are required to take pregnancy tests before, during, and after taking the med.
Sulfur: This has been used for centuries to treat acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Sulfur helps by breaking down blackheads and whiteheads. It is unclear exactly how it works, but elemental sulfur slowly oxidizes to become sulfurous acid, which has antibacterial properties.
Spironolactone is a prescription medication in tablet form used to treat certain patients with hyperaldosteronism (the body produces too much aldosterone, a naturally occurring hormone), low potassium levels, and in patients with edema (fluid retention) caused by various conditions.1
