Dermatologists today also have advanced ways to treat scarring, including chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser technologies. And they’re generally more cognizant of the psychological damage that acne can inflict.
Turmeric is an age-old antiseptic. It is widely used as a topical paste to treat skin conditions and infections. It kills the bacteria present on the skin and also aids in the quick recovery of the skin cells (41).
Directions Clean the skin thoroughly before applying this product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer one to three times daily. Because excessive drying of the skin may occur, start with one application daily, then gradually increase to two or three times daily if needed or directed by a doctor. If bothersome dryness or peeling occurs, reduce application to once a day or every other day. If going outside, apply sunscreen after using this product. If irritation or sensitivity develops, stop use of both products and ask a doctor.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has published a number of useful tips that you can follow in managing your skin condition. There are also several videos on YouTube that offer useful device. The AAD tips are summarized below:
Neem is one of the most widely used anti-acne home remedies. Its leaves have antifungal, antibacterial, and blood purifying properties and also work as a natural astringent (57). It cools down the skin and prevents you from getting pimples.
Dermalogica sells its full-size Clear Start products a la carte (all at around $20 — this line is definitely not made for the thrifty), and there are even more options than the five in the travel kit. We were surprised how much the products appealed to us: We didn’t pay attention to the aesthetics of most acne treatments, but the Clear Start caught our eye in a god way. More importantly, we loved the mix of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, plus all-natural heavy hitters like tea tree oil and witch hazel. And in addition to the wash, toner, moisturizer, and treatments, the kit includes an acne-safe (read: oil-free) sunscreen in its lineup.

Some adults carry scars from acne. Some relatively aggressive surgical procedures can improve scars. Procedures include dermabrasion, several types of lasers, injections under the skin called “fillers,” and chemical peeling. These procedures remove the scarred surface and expose unblemished skin layers. Dermatologists also occasionally use glycolic acid and other chemical peels to loosen blackheads and decrease pimples. Microdermabrasion has little effect on acne itself, but is effective in combination with lasers.. Before considering such treatment it is important to discuss the procedures, necessary precautions, and likely results with a doctor.
The face has more oil-producing glands than any other part of the body, says Carolyn Jacob, MD, a Chicago dermatologist. Top that with a day’s worth of makeup, sweat, smog, dust, and dirt, and you’re left with a pore-clogging concoction that, if not washed away regularly, will seep into and fill pores, resulting in blackheads and pimples.
(Because Dr. Lee found that her patients were overwhelmed by all the anti-acne choices in stores, she created her own line, SLMD Skincare. The products contain her must-use pimple preventing ingredients.)
In some cases, your skin might feel a bit irritated the first couple of weeks of treatment, says Diane S. Berson, MD. She is an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Ithaca.
These side effects contribute to why isotretinoin is often a last resort for curing severe acne. Extremely dry skin is one of the most common effects of the drug, but since it became FDA-approved to treat acne in 1982 it has also been linked to inflammatory bowel disease, depression, and increased rates of suicide. While studies have not proven that isotretinoin causes these conditions, they remain among the risks of taking the medication. Other serious but rare side effects include joint and muscle pain, eyesight trouble, and liver damage. Due to the drug’s impact on the liver, patients are advised not to drink and their liver enzymes are monitored throughout treatment. Much to my high-school delight, this made me the designated driver the majority of our senior year. If I had much more than a beer, it would show in my blood work and I was admonished by my doctor and my mom—something no teen wants to experience.
But if you’re already way past that stage, the first thing to do, Lortscher says, is to differentiate between scarring and temporary discoloration, the latter of which can happen after a particularly deep pimple pops. “Scars change the skin’s texture, not just the color of the skin,” Lortscher says. “Scars can be permanent, while dark spots from acne tend to fade by 6 to 12 months.”
Yogurt and Honey Mask: Mix one tablespoon of raw honey with one tablespoon of yogurt. Apply to face, paying particular attention to hairline, jawline and other acne prone areas. Relax for 10 minutes and gently wipe off with a damp cloth.
