“Chemical peels work well for the red or brown pigmentations on the skin,” explains Dr. Goldenberg, “since they peel off dead and discolored skin and help even out skin tone.” Dr. Bank recommends stronger chemical peels like retinol or TCA peels, which can help to deeply exfoliate skin and stimulate collagen, but cautions that “care must be taken with these peels because they can cause hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones.”

If you plan to spend time outdoors, it is important to know that isotretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You can sunburn unexpectedly and quickly. To protect your skin, dermatologists recommend that people taking isotretinoin:

Many lotions and creams are sold at drugstores to help prevent acne and clear it up. You can try different ones to see which helps. Products with benzoyl peroxide (say: BEN-zoil peh-ROK-side) or salicylic (say: sal-uh-SIL-ick) acid in them are usually pretty helpful for treating acne. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that can lead to acne and it can reduce swelling (puffiness) of pimples. Salicylic acid is another acne-fighting ingredient. It causes skin to dry out and peel, which can help get rid of pimples, too.

Isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol, and denatured alcohol are everywhere in acne treatment because they trick you into thinking they’re working: Splash some on and any oil on your face instantly vaporizes. The toothpaste really works. I first tried putting it on at night- and I suppose it helped some. But what works better for me is to put it on after I wash my face in the morning with a scrub. It stings more but it’s not that bad. I keep it on for 30 minutes and then I wash it off.

For women taking birth control pills, many of those preparations have androgenic (male hormone-like) properties and can contribute to significant acne eruptions. Progestins in these medications, depot injections and intrauterine devices are the most likely to cause acne.

Remember that effective acne treatment is a marathon, not a sprint. Some believe that quick fixes found in their medicine cabinet are viable options, wondering to themselves: Can hydrogen peroxide cure acne? or Does sulfur make acne better? In most cases like these, the answer is no. These solutions are short-lived, and can result in worsened breakouts.

If you are sensitive to salicylic acid or find commercial products ineffective for your back acne (bacne), try a medicated skin powder. This will usually work well and won’t over-dry your skin. Speak to your pharmacist about brand options.
