Oral contraceptives. Birth control pills contain female hormones that work by counteracting the effect of male hormones (such as testosterone) on acne. Their use is limited to female patients. The maximum benefit of oral contraceptives on acne occurs in three to four months. Side effects include nausea, weight gain, spotting, breast tenderness, and blood clots.
MURAD VS PROACTIV It’s strange how our healthcare system works. Most doctors would prescribe a battery of drugs without batting an eyelid, no matter how toxic they are, to counter some health problems without realizing how far-fetched the impact of these can be. I am 21. And I feel none less a guinea pig. Read More …

“You unfortunately cannot determine the strength of a product strictly by the percentage of its active ingredients because how well a product works depends on how well its inactive ingredients help it penetrate the skin,” explains Dr. Green. “In other words, a 2 percent benzoyl peroxide may be more effective than another brand’s 5 percent benzoyl peroxide because there are other ingredients helping out.”
Combination medications are exactly what they sound like—acne medications that harness the power of two acne-fighting ingredients in one bottle. These are generally made up of topical retinoid or benzoyl peroxide treatments along with topical antibiotics.
Stay out of the sun and tanning beds. Tanning damages you skin. In addition, some acne medications make the skin very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, which you get from both the sun and indoor tanning devices.
The most commonly available topical retinoids are tretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene. A meta-analysis of five multicentre randomized investigator-blind trials involving 900 patients showed adapalene 0.1% gel to be as effective as, but less irritating than, tretinoin 0.025% gel.8 Different concentrations of retinoids affect tolerability. One commonly used approach is to start with the lowest concentration and increase as tolerated.
There is also a growing body of evidence for laser treatment of acne, standalone or in the context of PDT. However, similar to light therapy, the power and quality of research is limited by small patient numbers, lack of a control population, and comparison to standard therapies. Nonetheless, preliminary studies have shown improvement in acne, and even potential long-lasting effects with the 1550-nm erbium-glass laser, 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser, and PDT with laser.
Patients should be advised to wash their face gently with warm water and mild soap or cleanser, twice daily. An un-medicated face-wash is sufficient, although products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be effective. Rough scrubbing should be avoided as it causes follicular rupture, increasing the inflammatory response. Patients with sensitive skin, e.g. atopic dermatitis, should avoid soap, and anti-acne cleansers may cause irritation and contact dermatitis.
The milk and honey combination makes for a wonderful acne facial. Milk cleanses the skin and keeps it bacteria-free (58). It nourishes the skin and exfoliates it to make it soft and supple. It also renders a natural glow to the skin (59).
Use a toner after cleansing. After you wash your face, exfoliate, or apply a face mask, apply a toner to the entirety of your face. Toners work to tighten pores making it less likely that dirt and oil will become trapped in them. Buy acne toners at a local drugstore, or use witch hazel or apple cider vinegar dabbed on with a cotton ball. Don’t rinse toners after application – allow them to stay on your skin.
D There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use in pregnant women despite potential risks.
If these treatments are ineffective, it may be necessary to have a dermatologist give you corticosteroid injections. These injections tend to reduce inflammation in the nodules and allow the nodules to heal more quickly, lessening the chance of them leaving scars. If all else fails, a medication known as isotretinoin will often help. Isotretinoin is available by prescription only and its use needs to be carefully monitored since this medication has been known to produce severe and even potentially dangerous side effects on occasion. Dermatologists will normally refuse to prescribe isotretinoin for women who are pregnant, as it has been known to be a cause of birth defects. On the positive side, isotretinoin is quite effective in reducing sebum production, a major contributor to acne, in normalizing follicular desquamation or the thinning and peeling of the skin, in reducing bacterial activity, and in acting as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Oral antibiotics have been used to treat acne for many years. Like topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics work by reducing Propionibacteria acnes (the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts). They also help decrease inflammation of the skin.
Most patients with mild acne can be treated with topical treatment (gels, solutions and lotions) that can be obtained over-the-counter in New Zealand without prescription. Most people just use topical agents for facial skin as they can be difficult to apply to one’s back. Extra vitamins and minerals have not been proved to help.
Don’t touch your face. This is incredibly difficult, as people are prone to touching their faces on a regular basis. Be careful about scratching your face, resting your face on your hands, and picking at pimples. Never pop your zits or squeeze at pesky blackheads, as this only introduces more bacteria to your skin and will make your acne worse.
“Estrogen opposes testosterone, so when your ovaries stop producing estrogen, your relative testosterone levels rise,” she explains. This can cause many women to suddenly develop severe acne, particularly around the jaw and chin.

It’s like clockwork…on your face. Every month, you probably start to feel bloated and notice a near breakout around your chin and jawline. It’s not you—it’s your hormones. “Normal hormonal fluctuations can trigger outbreaks,” explains Dr. Hale. “They’re more common along the chin and jaw than on your T-zone.”

Patient safety is a dermatologist’s first concern. If this medicine is an option for you, your dermatologist will talk with you about how to take this medicine safely and what you can expect. You and your dermatologist should jointly decide whether this medicine is right for you.
1. Wash your face regularly — with a targeted face wash. Find a facial cleanser with ingredients that treat acne without stripping your skin of its natural moisture and oils. Ideally, this is a formula that doesn’t contain a detergent and is non-foaming; good ingredients to look for are salicylic acid, charcoal, or sulfur. And just as importantly, make sure you wash your face twice a day, every day — not just at night.
The main issue with this procedure is that too much steroid could cause atrophy or death to the surrounding tissues. So it is better to do several injections instead of one injection with too much steroid.

Drink a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of honey and lime juice daily in the morning on an empty stomach. This will purify the system by flushing out the toxins from the body and maintain the pH balance of the skin, thus curing pimples and acne.
The office visits and medical tests allow a dermatologist to look for early warning signs of possible side effects and determine how well the medicine is working. The dermatologist will look for signs of depression, inflammatory bowel disease, and other possible side effects.
Over-the-counter medications: Nonprescription or over-the-counter medications for acne are plentiful and can be effective for milder forms of acne. They come in the form of soaps, washes, and cleansers.
Before seeing a physician, patients frequently use over-the-counter therapies for their acne. Such treatments may be more accessible, cosmetically elegant, less expensive and less irritating than prescription therapies.17 However, there is insufficient evidence to evaluate and compare the efficacy of over-the-counter formulations.2
