Proactiv is the worst! I had the exact same problem..i tried to get off of it three times but kept breaking out more and more. The key to getting off proactiv is to use vegetable glycerin soap and baking soda. Wash your face with veg glycerin soap. Be sure to has no colors, dyes or chemicals! Then after washing, take some baking soda and mix it with a little water to create a paste…this is a very similar exofliant to proactiv. Charlotte is right about baking soda leaving your skins acid mantle exposed. I’m an Esthetician and utilize many of these myself, but some things need warnings. Such as using lemon juice. It makes your skin very photosensitive , likely resulting with hyperpigmentation(dark spots) if exposed to the sun. A note regarding the toothpaste remedy: Make absolutely sure you’ve checked the ingredient list on the tube. Some brands contain sodium hydroxide, a highly basic substance which denatures skin. I used to have lots of acne too and only mary kay products kept it really clear, but like you, when i stopped acne was back. Through online research i discovered that many people have been recommended by dermatologists to use clearasil. It doesnt keep my skin 100% clear but close. I combine that with clean and clear persa gel for the few breakouts i get. I wash my face at night and morning. At night i wear a light face moisturizer, and durig he day i wear sunblock under my makeup. I do use st ives apricot scrub once or twice a week. If i notice my pores too big i just a little lemon mixed w a few drops of water and voila, theyre gone. For large pores u can also try egg white with a few drops of lemon at least once a week (i swear this works magic!). I also try home made masks that work for me. If just want to clear my pores and dead cells i mix baking soda, honey and lemon and create a consistency. If i want to feel my skin really soft and brighter i mix a tbspn of oatmeal oats with water and once theyre soaked i crush them and apply that to my face until it dries. I know many home remedies, my point is try a few and see what works best for you. But as for the cleanser, id say clearasil is the best one ive used and its cheap and very gentle with skin. If a basic facial cleanser doesn’t cut oiliness, try a product that includes an acid such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid. I have a very sensitive skin & pro breakout & have a lot of dark spots due to acne scars. One of my concerns, aging skin around my eyes. Oatmeal can power you up from the inside out-and the outside in. If you soak/cook your oats and use them in mask, they can reduce the inflammation and unsightly redness that accompanies breakouts. Add some honey to your mask and you have a great recipe for a rather tasty sounding acne remedy. Keep in mind that oatmeal on its own will not cure your acne, and should be used as part of a sensible routine acne treatment. However, it may very well reduce the blatant, painful, appearance of the breakouts.
Both photodynamic therapy and laser therapy show potential for long-term reduction in acne, so an argument could be made that they could provide some long-term relief for some people, but not cure. And concerningly, like isotretinoin, these treatments achieve their results primarily through damaging skin oil glands. A note regarding the toothpaste remedy: Make absolutely sure you’ve checked the ingredient list on the tube. Some brands contain sodium hydroxide, a highly basic substance which denatures skin. What is it doing in your mouth? It balances the pH of your toothpaste. This is why we don’t swallow toothpaste. So if you’re not sure, just don’t use it on your face.
Hi, so I’ve been struggling with acne since forever and I’ve tried so many things and wasted so much money trying to get rid of it. However, nothing seems to work for very long. It seems as though my skin only temporarily accepts the remedy, then harshly rejects it a few days later. Sometimes it gets so bad that my skin dries out or becomes too oily, which I then go onto another new and different solution. I’ve talked to a doctor, but they weren’t much help either. Please, if anyone can help me, I would be welcome to it.

There’s no quick fix for acne. Medicines don't work overnight. Many treatments take weeks of daily use before your skin improves. Some acne may take up to 6 months to clear up. Afterward, basic skin care -- bathing daily and washing your face and hands with mild soap -- may not be enough. You may need to keep using your medicine even when your skin clears. Follow your doctor’s directions. Don’t use too much or too little.
Charlotte is right about baking soda leaving your skins acid mantle exposed. I’m an Esthetician and utilize many of these myself, but some things need warnings. Such as using lemon juice. It makes your skin very photosensitive , likely resulting with hyperpigmentation(dark spots) if exposed to the sun. So it’s not the best in summer…and use some spf (there are natural sources as well) when using lemon juice on your skin. Also,  coarse ground salt is waaaay too abrasive for your face. AND anybody with acne that is inflammed especially pustules (whiteheads) should not be scrubbing with most mechanical exfoliators! It causes more irritation and can spread bacteria from breaking open the pustule. Blackheads are okay to scrub! Use a chemical form when broken out with inflammed/pustule lesions . Lactic acid in milk….citric acid in citrus fruits….salicylic like in wintergreen. Chemical exfoliating just means the ingredients do the work instead of an abrasive material scrubbing! In addition to washing your pillows, if you use make-up brushes to apply your foundation, eyeshadow, etc. these should also be washed once a week. Mix a little dawn dish soap with olive oil which will not only clean your brush and make them good for your face, but they will also condition the bristles and lead to a longer brush life.
