Charlotte is right about baking soda leaving your skins acid mantle exposed. I’m an Esthetician and utilize many of these myself, but some things need warnings. Such as using lemon juice. It makes your skin very photosensitive , likely resulting with hyperpigmentation(dark spots) if exposed to the sun. So it’s not the best in summer…and use some spf (there are natural sources as well) when using lemon juice on your skin. Also,  coarse ground salt is waaaay too abrasive for your face. AND anybody with acne that is inflammed especially pustules (whiteheads) should not be scrubbing with most mechanical exfoliators! It causes more irritation and can spread bacteria from breaking open the pustule. Blackheads are okay to scrub! Use a chemical form when broken out with inflammed/pustule lesions . Lactic acid in milk….citric acid in citrus fruits….salicylic like in wintergreen. Chemical exfoliating just means the ingredients do the work instead of an abrasive material scrubbing! Overall, great tips….some just need precautions!

ugh i know right :/ i have really bad acne right now because of proactiv….i actually watch this girl called, Bubzbeauty, on youtube…and she has tons of home-remedies for acne. The one i think is the most affective and it’s made my skin SOOOO much better, is by using oatmeal. You basically take plain, dry oatmeal (about one spoon is enough) You make the oatmeal wet by using water, then you have to apply the oatmeal to your face, kind of rubbing it in and you can leave some traces of the actual oatmeal on your face. This is just the bad news it means for skin, not even going into how completely unnecessary it is altogether. Hot yoga dehydrates you to dangerous levels(even if you DO drink water constantly because it takes time for it to reach your system fully. If anything, ice cold water while being very dehydrated can put you into shock or make you nauseated if you drink too quickly) which is very bad for your body and especially your muscles. It doesn’t burn ANY extra calories or help you become more flexible.(as your body needs internally produced heat to stretch, not external) Plus it makes most people absolutely miserable and causes you to have a mental block towards exercise.(unless you really really like to sweat in severe heat which most sane people do not have a natural propensity for)
Proactive didn’t work for me either. Neither did strong prescription topical treatments or drugs. Your problem is internal. Not just eating a clean Paleo-type diet but, giving your body the nutritional support that it needs. I found out that I was low in zinc and had an imbalance of essential fatty acids. I also found out that some of my body’s systems needed nutritional help-blood sugar balance, digestion and liver/gallbladder. When I addressed my nutritional deficiencies and gave my body the support that it needed, my acne vanished. Everyone is different, meaning that we all have different nutritional needs and problems-like hormonal, digestion, and so on. Deficiencies is also a big thing because, even a nutrient-dense diet will be lacking in enough minerals-due to soil depletion. Also, deficiencies take a while to replenish, which is why specific supplementation is usually necessary.

Hi Claire, thank you so much for all the advice. I am 18 years old and have suffered from acne for quite a while now. I have tried so many products and nothing seems to be working for me, I’m also very health conscious and therefore do not want to take any medication for it. Use a toner after cleansing. After you wash your face, exfoliate, or apply a face mask, apply a toner to the entirety of your face. Toners work to tighten pores making it less likely that dirt and oil will become trapped in them. Buy acne toners at a local drugstore, or use witch hazel or apple cider vinegar dabbed on with a cotton ball. Don’t rinse toners after application - allow them to stay on your skin.

I used to have lots of acne too and only mary kay products kept it really clear, but like you, when i stopped acne was back. Through online research i discovered that many people have been recommended by dermatologists to use clearasil. It doesnt keep my skin 100% clear but close. I combine that with clean and clear persa gel for the few breakouts i get. I wash my face at night and morning. At night i wear a light face moisturizer, and durig he day i wear sunblock under my makeup. I do use st ives apricot scrub once or twice a week. If i notice my pores too big i just a little lemon mixed w a few drops of water and voila, theyre gone. For large pores u can also try egg white with a few drops of lemon at least once a week (i swear this works magic!). I also try home made masks that work for me. If just want to clear my pores and dead cells i mix baking soda, honey and lemon and create a consistency. If i want to feel my skin really soft and brighter i mix a tbspn of oatmeal oats with water and once theyre soaked i crush them and apply that to my face until it dries. I know many home remedies, my point is try a few and see what works best for you. But as for the cleanser, id say clearasil is the best one ive used and its cheap and very gentle with skin. Sodium bicarbonate, glorious sodium bicarbonate, swoops in and makes itself useful in too many ways to count. In the case of acne remedies, this fabulous substance (also known as baking soda) is useful thanks to its mild antiseptic properties, as well as its uncanny ability to fight off fungus and bacteria and dry up excess oil, all while exfoliating your skin via microdermabrasion and making it soft and beautiful. I know-I get star struck too now whenever I see a box of baking soda.
Do not try the orange peel face mask! I was looking up easy DIY acne spot treatments and came across this one and didn’t think much of it as I had used lemon juice on pimples before and my skin had been fine. However I just tried this mask, I even added a little honey to make sure the mask wouldn’t be too strong, and it burned my skin! I noticed it was burning more than treatments usually do but didn’t think much of it. After about ten minutes it became too much to bare so I rinsed with warm water and was surprised to see large bright red patches all over my cheeks. Thankfully they only appeared in the areas I applied the mask to, which was only a few. But still my face is burning and tomato red. Lotion seemed to calm the areas but the color is persisting half an hour after the fact. Please for your sake do not use this mask, at least if you have never used an orange peel mask before. Mix into a fine gloopy paste, spread over face, leave it on for half an hour, gently rub/wash off, then moisturise. I do this daily. lemon juice is fading my old scars and discolouration, the honey soothes my dry bits and fights bacteria and the sandalwood exfoliates and tones as it’s astringent (and I really like the smell, if you don’t like it I think rose water would be a good substitute!)
I am washing with dove bar soap. I moisurize with a home mixture of Aloe vera and tea tree oil mixed together. Together it is a great combination for combination skin. Takes care of the oil and the dryness. Also helps deal with any previous scarring and repairs damged skin, minimizes wrinkles while combating acne. I feel the time of putting harsh chemicals on the largest organ of the body which is then ingested into the cirrculatory system is over. I also suffer from eczema and use a coconut oil/aloe vera homemade body lotion which seems to keep my skin in check. Both photodynamic therapy and laser therapy show potential for long-term reduction in acne, so an argument could be made that they could provide some long-term relief for some people, but not cure. And concerningly, like isotretinoin, these treatments achieve their results primarily through damaging skin oil glands. What damaging these glands will mean to the health and aging of the skin in the long-term remains to be seen, and is a risk.

Ah, oranges. They taste rejuvenating and refreshing, and our skin may find them just as appealing as our taste buds do. Let yogurt or milk come to room temperature (or close to) so you don’t get a chilly shock when you put it on your skin. Mix 1 tablespoon of milk or yogurt thoroughly with 1 tablespoon of honey. You can apply the mixture with a cotton pad, but scooping it up and patting it on works just fine as well. Let each layer dry before adding a new one, until the mask is the thickness you want. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wash your mask off and use a washcloth to gently scrub in a circular motion, getting rid of loosened dead skin. Once you’re finished, moisturize as usual.

1. Acne is caused by dirt/dirty skin– Acne is not caused by dirt, poor hygiene, not washing your face and so on. Too much scrubbing or cleansing with harsh soaps or chemicals can actually irritate your skin and make the acne worse. If you “over clean” you can end up drying out your skin, which will then try and compensate by making that much more oil.
